What do you think of Lionel for a boy's name? I'm trying to draw up a shortlist at the moment.

Awful. Really awful.

Sorry

suwoo · 31/05/2010 21:39

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Sorry, excuse me I am being a bitch, but it's a big fat no from me.

GillyBoot · 31/05/2010 21:40

I suspected this may still be the case

Nooooo - it makes me think of Lionel Blair on 'Give us a Clue'! Really horrid. Sorry

capstone · 31/05/2010 21:43

Not keen, sorry. Do you like any of the other "lion" names like Leo or Leon?

suwoo · 31/05/2010 21:45

What other names do you like? It seems like you are quite attached to Lionel, is it a family name? Would you be gutted if DS came along and you couldn't call him Lionel?

If so, call it him, don't listen to the vipers

southeastastra · 31/05/2010 21:46

poor lionel blair he's quite a nice chap i reckon

GillyBoot · 31/05/2010 22:32

It does have a personal association for us. Lionel Blair (nice man though he is) does seem to have spoilt it. We might save it for a middle name.

No, Leo and Leon aren't quite what we're looking for. Thanks for the suggestions.

I think Lionel is a lovely name. I would much rather see a baby Lionel than another Alfie, Jack or Finley.

Go for it I say!

suwoo · 01/06/2010 07:58

That is a good point tummytickler. I have been thinking about baby Lionel all night

and it has grown on me. I think after the initial reactions of and people would be fine and just accept him as a Lionel.

Hedwig3 · 01/06/2010 09:38

Prefer Linus.

MarineIguana · 01/06/2010 09:39

I like it (and I think Lionel Blair is a sweetie!). He might get called Lion which I would also love.

BexieID · 01/06/2010 09:40

I was a bit at first but now it's gone round my head a few times it's actually quite nice. I thought of Lionel Richie, not Lionel Blair though.

bleedingheart · 01/06/2010 09:52

I was thinking of Geoffrey Palmer's character in As Time Goes By... It depends what circles you move in, what school he will go to... He's more likely to be called 'Lie' than Lion I think.

maktaitai · 01/06/2010 09:58

It must be coming back if it is hanging on in your mind. 'Fraid to me it means only Lionel Morton from off of Play Away - check those sidies! But that's a million years ago now. (Bet he was boffing Toni Arthur btw, she was HOT).

sophiesmummie · 01/06/2010 10:31

I'm surprised at the negative reactions - I don't mind Lionel. But then I've never heard of Lionel Blair (is he awful?).

Lionel is a strong, masculine, classic name that, to my ears, is much nicer and interesting than yet another Jack, Charlie, Alfie or Finn.

mopsyflopsy · 01/06/2010 10:46

I like Lionel. To me it has no connotations at all. Just sounds like a good, solid boys name that isn't as overused as so many others.

swanandduck · 01/06/2010 11:37

I don't like it, but I've also seen posts on here for Giles and Bruce and I would put Lionel in the same category, so maybe I'm just missing a new fashion for 'elderly dad' names.

organiccarrotseedsareplanted · 02/06/2010 12:35

I think it's really sweet, and a darned sight better than a lot of the awful "new" names that are around.

alexisfaith · 03/06/2010 09:50

Just go for it. Associated celebs aside, Lionel sounds lovely.

Cortina · 03/06/2010 11:21

Love it, know one about my own age, very cool.

mama2moo · 03/06/2010 12:41

'Hello, is it me your looking for'

I think its a cool name

JeanLouiseFinch · 03/06/2010 12:48

It's a great name. So is Hedwig's suggestion Linus. Go for it.

noddyholder · 03/06/2010 12:50

Its my dps middle name!I actually had someone laugh out loud when I read out his full name over the phone for a bank thing!Bloody cheek I really like it.he is named after Lionel bart as he comes from a bit of a showbizzy family or as I like to call them drunk show offs Go for it!

Effjay · 03/06/2010 12:51

Don't like, I'm afraid. Can't get the association with bad 70s comedians out of my head.
