Ophelia - soon to be chavtastic?

What is the likelihood of Ophelia going ?downmarket? in the next 5 or so years?

I err towards classic English names (Jemima, Lucinda, Harriet?) but my husband who, although has lived in the UK since birth, is of Indian origin and is really not keen.

Ophelia is the only name we can agree on though I have a slight concern that it may be become a little chavtastic in the future? Am I being paranoid?

Oh and by the way I am very aware of the literary connection and not at all bothered! After all, was only fiction

Phooey!

A1980 · 31/05/2010 00:04

Well to be honest on a discussion board it surely goes without saying that everything on here in one persons view. Do i have to fill every post up with "it's only my opinion" in case I hurt some poor unsuspecting souls feelings?

I shouldn't have to remind anyone of that. Sorry that you're not up to speed that discussion boards are pure opinion by definition.

If you I'm up myself so be it. I really don't care enough to argue with ignorant people.

Well....

hmc just just called it poncey. Go on. get in there!

See how ridiculous it was to single me out?

A1980 · 31/05/2010 00:08

I'm not trying to raise anyone's opinion of me. I don't care, unlike you.

It's a name forum. Get a grip.

Sorry you are offended Pixie - but this is a thread asking for honest opinions on names. I gave mine (shrugs). I am sure you wouldn't rate my dd's name too higly - but tbh ( I mean this kindly) I wouldn't care. Why are you so bothered? You love your child, you think she is wonderful. End of?

bananamumma · 31/05/2010 00:12

I can't see what Al980 has done so wrong? She doesn't like the name Ophelia. Get over it!

hmc · 31/05/2010 00:13

Tis human nature to make assessments of others based on accent, name, clothing etc. It is a little prejudiced but I guess it is useful shorthand to decode the world around us

hmc · 31/05/2010 00:14

I am trying to smooth things over here, but think I am making things worse so I'm off to another thread to wreak unintended havoc!

A1980 · 31/05/2010 00:14

I just figured it out Pixie.

I didn't bother reading other peoples posts before I posted on it myself

I didn't BLOODY know that your new baby was called Ophelia when I posted becasue i hadn't read it. There are you are jumping to conclusions thinking I'm being deliberatly unkind. So you took personally, not my problem.

You like it, I wouldn't call my child that.... people have different opinions, that's life.

bananamumma · 31/05/2010 00:15

Pixie, you do need to get a grip. I've heard FAR worse than 'it's a bloody awful name' on here!

If you can't bear people 'dissing' your child's name then I suggest you refrain from visiting this board.

To the other posters hmc and bananamumma... thank you for your level headed responses.

At least some people have some common sense and maturity here.

Pixie, I think you have a persecution complex.

it's about as necessary as what you said to me.

No one else seems to think I said/did anything wrong. Nor do I.

If you can't take someone else making negative comments about a name then don't read them. You just took my comments personally and that is a little immature.

I didn't even know your baby had that name as i hadn't read the thread.

bananamumma · 31/05/2010 00:23

Don't worry Pixie. Stop stressing! Your children's names are fine but you've gotta understand the nature of this board! All names get dissed here..

Ps I love the nickname Fifi for Ophelia

A1980 · 31/05/2010 00:26

I apprecaite your apology. Thank you.

I thought that this was just a thread about what people thought of Ophelia. I hadn't read the rest of the thread first and I've said that several times. I would have minced my words if I'd seen that a poster had said that was their new baby's name. But you know what I don't I don't have time to read every post in every thread.

I only joined this a day or two ago and I see the rumours are right. Such animosity towards strangers over nothing is actually disturbing.

I doubt I'll come back.

Well it's not you. This site has had ALOT of bad press in the papers and I actually had reservations about joining.

Within 2 days of being a member look what happens...

I don't think I'll use it much, if at all.

Nothing personal but it's put me off a bit.
