Ophelia - soon to be chavtastic?

What is the likelihood of Ophelia going ?downmarket? in the next 5 or so years?

I err towards classic English names (Jemima, Lucinda, Harriet?) but my husband who, although has lived in the UK since birth, is of Indian origin and is really not keen.

Ophelia is the only name we can agree on though I have a slight concern that it may be become a little chavtastic in the future? Am I being paranoid?

Oh and by the way I am very aware of the literary connection and not at all bothered! After all, was only fiction

Just goes to show how literary my mind is, my thoughts went immediately to Ophelia the prostitute in Trading Places.

It doesn't sound like a name that will become chavvy (horrible word) to me, I don't know of any Ophelias in real life at all thus far.

M32song · 30/05/2010 16:03

fine as long as your surname isn't Bottom.

usualsuspect · 30/05/2010 16:03

No don't worry it will always be a posh name

MarshaBrady · 30/05/2010 16:04

You should be fine.

janeite · 30/05/2010 16:09

I think it will be fine - but I like Harriet better!

usualsuspect · 30/05/2010 16:11

An awful posh name tho

Ophelia could definitely fall into the trying-too-hard trap.

Beautiful, although can't imagine it on a baby, sorry Pixie. Just one of those names that one grows into

Ophelia would be:

  • barrister
  • ballet dancer
  • painter/art historian
  • opera singer
  • roadie for heavy metal band
skihorse · 30/05/2010 17:53

Not sure about "chav" - but it'll certainly depend upon accent.

Oh feel yer...

skihorse · 30/05/2010 17:54

What if she marries Mr. Cox?

Apphia · 30/05/2010 17:58

Goodness really wouldn't want to be considered as 'trying too hard'! It honestly is the only name we could agree on.

Not too worried about it being an adult name, i'm guessing we would shorten it too Effie or something.

Pixie, can you share what your other children are called? I may find some inspiration!

Ed Balls' sister is called Ophelia.

(Not really.)

Apphia · 30/05/2010 18:04

Other options (depending on how much I can twist my husbands arm) are:

Aurelia
Clementine
Flora
Georgia
Harriet
Iris
Jemima
Ottilie
Poppy
Tess
Thea

It's a minefield this baby naming game isn't it!

nannynobnobs · 30/05/2010 18:23

Jemima, Ottilie and Clementine are all wonderful. I think Ottilie is actually much nicer to say than Ophelia - which I always hear in a Carry On kind of way...I'll feel ya.....

sedgiebaby · 30/05/2010 18:28

I love Thea can't have it because DH can't say TH too well on account of French being his first language lol, Ophelia is nice I'm in the south west, I don't know anyone called Ophelia. I think Flora, Flori, Florence are all really nice, but perhaps becoming very popular in the near future. Ottile is the only one in your list that doesn't appeal to me so much.
