Ophelia - soon to be chavtastic?

What is the likelihood of Ophelia going ?downmarket? in the next 5 or so years?

I err towards classic English names (Jemima, Lucinda, Harriet?) but my husband who, although has lived in the UK since birth, is of Indian origin and is really not keen.

Ophelia is the only name we can agree on though I have a slight concern that it may be become a little chavtastic in the future? Am I being paranoid?

Oh and by the way I am very aware of the literary connection and not at all bothered! After all, was only fiction

Pixie what lovely names! If I had my own way they would all be on the 'list'.

Thanks for all the opinions so far, much appreciated and will certainly be used to canvas DH!

Apphia - good choices of names - my dds both have names from your list... and so did my now-dead labrador! (RIP )

I really can't imagine Ophelia being 'chavvy'. If by chavvy you also mean will it become common (in the popular sense), well who knows? It's a bit of a mouthful so it might not do.

Good luck!

crumpette · 30/05/2010 18:43

Aurelia's lovely

Ophelia's nice too, will never be ''chavastic'' but has the unfortunate 'Oh feel yer' element

crumpette · 30/05/2010 18:43

Pixie, fab names

annabell28 · 30/05/2010 19:30

Goodness, God forbid that 'chavvy' people should steal a 'posh' name! Quelle horreur. Shouldn't be allowed.

Beautiful name - call her whatever you want.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 30/05/2010 21:51

lovely name but personally couldn't do it due to the literary connotations

loobylu3 · 30/05/2010 21:54

I don't think it is 'chavvy'- hate that word anyway.

However, it isn't a name I am fond of personally. It is over the top in terms of frilliness and doesn't sound particularly pretty to me.

How about Miranda, Celia, Rosalind or Beatrice if you like classic, Shakespearian names?

What sort of names does your husband prefer?

WinkyWinkola · 30/05/2010 22:01

Ophelia is a beautiful name. Will never be chavvy.

My dad wouldn't refer to my dd as Ophelia because of the literary connotations. But Ophelia in Hamlet was a beautiful, caring, innocent woman blasted by the madness and evil around her, not within her. And her death by suicide was never confirmed.

If I have another dd, Isadora is in the offing too.

WinkyWinkola · 30/05/2010 22:02

I hate the word 'chavvy' too so ignore my first statement.

This might sound daft but i was on a train a while ago and this gorgeous little girl who looked about three was on the train with her mum.

Her mum called her Ophelia and I winced. Awful bloody name for a cute little girl.

Also, Shakespeare's Ophelia went mad and killed herself, Ophelia was a prostitue in Trading Places.

There are regal sounding girls names that will never be chavtastic.

Go with a classic.

It's not so much the media portrayal of it.

It just isn't a nice sounding name. My knee jerk reaction was "oh god" when I heard it used on a gorgeous looking child.

No will know or care that it means help or aid which isn't a great meaning either. You don't go around advertising your name meaning.

I focus on what sounds nice rather than meanings.

WinkyWinkola · 30/05/2010 23:40

It's not certain she killed herself. She drowned, yes, but it's never said she actually killed herself.

And she went mad because of the horrors around her. I reckon I'd've gone mad too.

I really don't think it is going to go down market, but I would avoid it because it sounds so 'try hard'

Northernlurker · 30/05/2010 23:52

Loobylu - you've got all three of my girls names there - Miranda, Rosalind and Beatrice - obviously I recommend all of them highly

hmc · 30/05/2010 23:53

Have just read the thread and found that Bonsoir said the same (which slightly horrifies me)

A1980 · 30/05/2010 23:57

Oh come on Pixie..... get a grip!

I don't sound like a nice person becasue I don't think Ophelia is nice sounding and I acknowledge the FACT that no one in day to day life actaully knows or cares what the next persons name means.

That seems a bit much to say I'm not a nice person in general.....! Some people are unbelieveable!

It's just my opinion and if that think that makes me a generally not nice person then I don't know what to say other than grow up and accept that people have different opinions which is the point of this board is it not?.

OnEdge · 30/05/2010 23:59

I know of a berlesque performer called Ophelia Bitz, but she isnt very famous so should be ok

WinkyWinkola · 31/05/2010 00:00

Try hard? Try hard what? It's a pretty name.
