Morven

DH loves this, I quite like it, but my problem is it makes me think of the book "Morven Callar" The main character, Morven, is pretty strange. DH says if we use it for DD, I'll lose the association.

So what I want to ask is: Has anyone heard of the book, and if so, would you associate the name with it?

Yes, heard of it, never read it though. To me it has sort of 'dark' connotations - maybe because it's a bit like Raven? It makes me think of Edgar Alen Poe and graveyards I'm afraid...

However, I realise this is probably just me...

Thelongroadhome · 29/05/2010 16:56

I've seen the film and know a couple of people called Morven (is it Scottish?). It doesn't make me think of the film - just the name which I don't love or hate .

Themasterandmargaritas · 29/05/2010 16:56

My dsis is a Morven, it's a gorgeous Scottish name and I always felt quite that she got it and not me.

I've not heard of the book.

mazzystartled · 29/05/2010 16:57

I've seen the film, with Samantha Morton, (ace soundtrack), so yes think of it straight away....but like the name

giraffesCANdriveAcar · 29/05/2010 16:58

Never heard of the book. Its my sisters name. It means big or something - theres a high flat round here called morven, and a street. Good thing about it is people can pronounce it easily, unlike Eilidh

UnrequitedSkink · 29/05/2010 17:05

Eilidh is a beautiful name!

sapell3 · 29/05/2010 17:07

Not keen on Morven, but I like Morwenna.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2010 17:35

Too close to Marvin.

Pingpong · 29/05/2010 17:46

I've read the book but I know 2 Morvens so think of them rather than the book.
I really like the name - go for it

FourLittleDucks · 29/05/2010 17:59

Love Morven, but we are in Scotland so maybe folk are a bit more used to it up here

allyfe · 29/05/2010 18:30

I've just seen the film. It is a very dark film, and it does make me think of that a little because that is where I know the name from.

But, I still think it is a nice name - it is original and pretty. And because the film and book aren't that well known, I doubt the associations would be that strong for most.

Grandhighpoohba · 29/05/2010 18:34

Thanks all. The name means big mountain I think. I do like it. We are in Scotland so shouldn't be too unusual. But yes, the book is quite dark.

I love the name Morven. Scottish

halfawake · 29/05/2010 18:52

Never heard of the book but think the name is pretty. I knew a couple and they were Scottish.

CheeseChomper · 29/05/2010 19:41

I actually quite like it, I think it could be a grower with people, especially once your little one actually arrives

braidsherhair · 29/05/2010 19:44

Love it. Use it. You'll never regret. The association is a good one. It's a fine film (haven't read the book though)

KristinaM · 29/05/2010 19:45

i have never heard of the book

i know several Morvens, its a lovely name

lira14 · 29/05/2010 19:57

it's a really striking beautiful name.

pitterpatterfeet · 29/05/2010 20:59

I think it's lovely and under used. Most Morven's I know are in their thirties

SarfEasticated · 29/05/2010 21:33

I agree the film if fab, soundtrack is superb - bought it and listen to it all the time - Samantha Morton was great in it too - a film to be proud of I reckon (if you forget about her cutting up and burying her BF body!)

Mithered · 29/05/2010 21:35

I really like the name - there is a mountain in the far north of Scotland called Morven. Beautiful view!

LilyBolero · 29/05/2010 21:37

i think it's lovely

mopsyflopsy · 30/05/2010 10:10

Have not heard of it before, but really like it .

dannas · 30/05/2010 11:16

The only Morven I know is Scottish and is male. He was named after the mountain.
It's all male to me.

DanJARMouse · 30/05/2010 11:18

There are a lot of Morven's up here and I think it is a gorgeous name for a wee girl.
