Just mulling this one over...

I like Jacob but not so sure about Jake which I guess is the inevitable nn - would appreciate any opinions on the name & nn.

Also, I know it is v popular in the States but seems to be less so over here? Do you know many Jacobs?

I don't like many names but I like Jacob. I know one and he is a Jacob not a jake. He's never been a jake as far as I know and is gone two. I suppose the nickname could come up at school age though. I do think jake is nice too though.

sweetkitty · 28/05/2010 16:38

My 3 week old DS is called Jacob so we love it!

nappyexpress · 28/05/2010 16:48

my dss has a Jacob in his class(age 9) and he has never been called Jake. Think its a lovely name.

5DollarShake · 28/05/2010 17:03

This was top of our short list, had DC2-2-be been a boy. Love it and Jake.

iMum · 28/05/2010 17:04

For me its a lovely name but will forever be "lost" now.

zozzle · 28/05/2010 17:04

I know 4 Jacobs (not called Jake as nn as far as I know) and 2 Jakes - quite well used round here

I do quite like the name - I like most biblical boys names in fact

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 28/05/2010 17:09

I like Jacob

Pidgin · 28/05/2010 17:32

interesting & positive so far, thank you all

iMum do you mean 'lost' like the TV show?

zozzle, whereabouts is round here, roughly?

iMum - we have been asked that as well if it was from the Lost character, erm no the one in the old testament in the Bible thanks

midnightexpress · 28/05/2010 17:36

I've got one and he's rather scrumptious. . There are one or two in both DCs' classes at nursery.

We use a mixture of Jacob and Jake - I like both, but we're in Scotland where 'Jakey' is a derogatory term so I tend to use Jacob.

maclover135 · 28/05/2010 17:39

We have a Jacob so obviously we love it too Has never been called Jake (is 3.4) but accept and am happy that this might change as he gets older.
Was, too, chosen as Old Testament name rather than 'Lost' reference!

franke · 28/05/2010 17:42

I like it.

flopsy1974 · 28/05/2010 17:48

I love it. We have decided to use it for a middle name if yellow bump is a boy.

jellybeans · 28/05/2010 17:48

I like it, like Jake too. I know several, only one nn Jake/Jakey.

BalloonSlayer · 28/05/2010 17:52

I know a few. They tend to be Jay for short.

I like it BUT I don't like the meaning/connotations of it. It means Supplanter (but so does James, I think) and it means that because the original Jacob stole his brother's birthright. Which is why I didn't want to use it for my second son. Yes, I know - blame the hormones.

shockers · 28/05/2010 17:53

I think it's a lovely name. There are no Jacobs in my school, only one at Ds's but three in his football team.... all lovely boys!

mamasmissionimpossible · 28/05/2010 17:54

ds is Jacob and I still love them name. I think it really suits him

withorwithoutyou · 28/05/2010 17:55

I like it a lot.

sapell3 · 28/05/2010 20:35

I like Jacob and Jake.

RunawayWife · 28/05/2010 20:50

Lovely name

LynetteScavo · 28/05/2010 20:52

Lot's of Jacobs around here.

It's a nice name, though.

NiceCuppaT · 28/05/2010 21:08

I know lots of Jacobs all around 18 months - 2.
I thinkn it might be in the top ten most popular names.

Poohbearsmom · 28/05/2010 22:20

Love it! But it is quite popular not that that would bother me but twilight jacob pops into my head straight away not the lost one, go figure... So there will be lots of twi fans using it! Great name

sweetkitty · 29/05/2010 08:52

There was only about 70 registered in Scotland last year (yes I am that sad) so it's not that popular, I only know of one other around here.

The Jakey thing did put me off slightly but we just won't call him Jakey

Jakey is a term for a wino up here

PuppyMonkey · 29/05/2010 08:55

Oh, I thought of Lost first too. That won't last long though, tis a nice name. Have an Esau next to go with it.
