Which one do you prefer and how popular are they just now?

Miriam. Annabel just makes me think of Annabel Karmel (bleurgh)

jkklpu · 26/05/2010 20:52

Miriam - I think Annabel is probably more popular atm

Galena · 26/05/2010 21:17

I know both a Miriam and an Annabel who are about a year old. I think they are both gorgeous names, but I think Miriam is slightly less popular.

SillyTillyBilly · 26/05/2010 22:14

I think they are both gorgeous names - classy and underused. I think I prefer Miriam but they are both great choices.

liliputlady · 26/05/2010 22:32

I vote for Miriam too.

dannas · 26/05/2010 22:51

Miriam.

hester · 26/05/2010 22:55

Miriam, every time.

TheFallenMadonna · 26/05/2010 22:55

Miriam too.

sapell3 · 26/05/2010 23:13

I really like both

getawiggleon · 27/05/2010 00:07

Another vote for Miriam (nn Mim). Prefer Anna to Annabel.

NadiaWadia · 27/05/2010 01:29

Annabel is lovely.

SE13Mummy · 27/05/2010 10:02

I prefer Miriam but then I do have a 12-month-old Miriam (aka Mim) of my own so ma be somewhat biased. I know a few older Miriams (aged 7, 9, 19 and 40s) and probably the same number of Annabels so wouldn't say either were overused names round here (SE London).

SambuccaKelly · 27/05/2010 10:04

Miriam. Much more of a classic name and great for a grown woman. Annabel is too fussy.

I'm in N London. Know one adult Miriam. three Annabels in 18 mth old DD's various toddler groups/baby classes etc.

flopsy1974 · 27/05/2010 10:08

Definately Miriam. Not popular at all at the moment.

Hedwig3 · 27/05/2010 10:11

Miriam

maria1665 · 27/05/2010 10:18

Miriam is lovely.

LouMacca · 27/05/2010 10:40

Annabel is lovely, don't like Miriam at all. Don't know a child called either of those names.

minipie · 27/05/2010 10:51

Miriam here too

BornToFolk · 27/05/2010 10:55

Miriam for definite. Annabel is a little too fussy for my taste but Miriam is a lovely, classic name for an adult and you there are lots of cute nickames you can use (Miri, Mimi, Mim etc) on a child, if you wanted to.

alyssa1980 · 28/05/2010 13:24

Another vote for Miriam. I LOVE it but I'm not allowed it for DD3 so think you should go for it!

zozzle · 28/05/2010 13:35

Miriam definitely

Annabel too frilly and girly for my taste

soon2be4 · 28/05/2010 17:15

Thanks everyone for your replies. Quite suprised by how many of you like Miriam! Just realised that Nick Clegg's wife is called Miriam. Not sure if this puts me off. Not that I have anything against the Cleggs but just that name may be about bit more in the press and what have you! Also my sister says it sounds like a middle aged woman rather than a baby. Wot do u all think?

My Miriam has never been accused of having a middle-aged name (she's a year old)! If anyone passes comment on her name it's usually to say how pretty it is or that it's not heard that often these days.

SillyTillyBilly · 29/05/2010 11:09

Looking at the stats the name Miriam has been fairly consistently in the top few hundred names for decades and decades. It just doesn't seem to make the top one hundred - I don't know why! Biblical names seem very popular for the boys but flower names and two syllable names ending with an 'ee' sound or 'a' sound seem to be the ones everyone is going for with the girls! All the girls I know are Evie, Gracie (Grace), Sophie, Daisy, Poppy, Molly, Tilly, Freya, Ruby etc etc
