English / Spanish boy names

We're expecting a little boy in June and DH and I have a couple of likely names. We've trawled Spanish and English baby name books. I'm pretty happy with one of them but I'm just wondering if there is something we've missed that we could use.

What we want is something that is pronounced the same in both languages (so no 'J' names - DH is Jose and is consistently called 'Josie' over here). We also want the name to be spelt the same, with no accents (so no Nicolas, which has an accent over the 'a' in Spanish).

We can't have Pablo for personal reasons. DH has something incomprehensible against the name Raphael(but shared by all the Spanish-speaking men I know - why?).

DS will have Basque and Galician heritage - for those in the know - so a name from there would be good.

What gems have we missed?

I'm not telling our list (at least not yet as I'mnot after a vote on them IYSWIM).

Ricardo
Santiago
Lorenzo
Esteban
Inigo Montoya (lol)

None of which are particularly English, but all would be known in England. No idea how modern/old-fashioned they are in Spain, though!

What about Gorka? cool-sounding name which is Euskadi for George.

Hugo would work well. I like Bruno. I know it's not actually Spanish but it would work well I think.

LaTrucha · 20/05/2010 20:38

I like Bruno but DH works with a complete spoon called Bruno so no go.

Gorka pretty cool but our surnames are a hard G and then a J so not sure.

We did consider Tiago...... Can't remember why it got axed.

Yup. Those Spanish / English names have all come under consideration!

Please remember I'm trying not to give away my list, so if I don't comment on a name you suggest, it's not necessarily because I couldn't give a monkeys or hate it!

I was feeling bad about not giving feedback on all the names.

Well I love Nicolas despite the accent issue, it can be spelled the same in both languages. I had this problem also and have ended up with a James- NOT my choice!!! Translates terribly (imo)

Lucas
Mateo
Gabriel
Luis
Thomas
Hugo
Ruben
Samuel
Marco
Adam
...?

seeker · 21/05/2010 08:40

My half Spanish is Oscar - which I don't much like in an English accent, but which is lovely in Spanish!

BoldChislers · 21/05/2010 08:49

nephew? husband?

BoldChislers · 21/05/2010 08:49

i'm going to guess nephew/ don't worry seeker.

RedRoseRibbon · 21/05/2010 09:00

Antonio is very nice name.

seeker · 21/05/2010 09:29

Well guessed, BoldChisler!

heading4home · 21/05/2010 09:38

How about Ramon? My favourite name (dh)Although it does get mispronounced either Raymond or Ramone all the time

Was also going to suggest Tiago and Raphael, but see those have been rejected

heading4home · 21/05/2010 09:39

I see you didn't want accents, but Dh spells it Ramon and not Ramón.

mrsmike · 21/05/2010 09:42

Raoul
Love it. A compromise for Raphael too?
