English / Spanish boy names

We're expecting a little boy in June and DH and I have a couple of likely names. We've trawled Spanish and English baby name books. I'm pretty happy with one of them but I'm just wondering if there is something we've missed that we could use.

What we want is something that is pronounced the same in both languages (so no 'J' names - DH is Jose and is consistently called 'Josie' over here). We also want the name to be spelt the same, with no accents (so no Nicolas, which has an accent over the 'a' in Spanish).

We can't have Pablo for personal reasons. DH has something incomprehensible against the name Raphael(but shared by all the Spanish-speaking men I know - why?).

DS will have Basque and Galician heritage - for those in the know - so a name from there would be good.

What gems have we missed?

I'm not telling our list (at least not yet as I'mnot after a vote on them IYSWIM).

We thought of Antonio but it sounds awful with our surname.

DH has vetoed Ramon. I liked it.

Oscar is my bf's boy.

Raoul was on our shortlist but somehow I know I'm not going to call him Raoul.

We've considered a few on Crumpette's list too.

I am pondering Tiago, though. Sounds great with DH's surname but not with mine.

I know I'm sounding negative about everything, but it is helping. Thankyou!

Hernan (add accent over 'a') sounds fantastic with our surnames and we both liked it but we can't have it due to pronunciation AND accent. We have had so many difficulties.

Vertran? a spanish friend called her DS this, they live in UK (though she did say everyone confused it with Bertram!)

AndieWalsh · 21/05/2010 14:33

My BIL is Galician and says 'Ramon' is used as slang for a fat boy

Esteban is lovely. Estevo is more authentically Galician, though, I think.

Also:

Xabier
Aleixo
Alexandre

LaTrucha · 21/05/2010 15:57

That's why DH vetoed Ramon!

I love Alex-type names and so does DH but one of my bf when a child was an Alex and he died at 16 and I don't want to reuse the name.

Pablo! I LOVE Pablo.

ThisIsJustTheStart · 22/05/2010 07:58

Oh fuck. I didn't read your OP properly and saw you can't have it. Apologies.

Does Daniel work (know a Spanish lad called Daniel)?

FutureMum · 22/05/2010 19:48

La Trucha, that will be because Raphael is that old fashioned Spanish singer, he used to sing songs in a histrionic and camp style. He is married to a Spanish duchess or something and has been around for ages.
I like Daniel.

LaTrucha · 23/05/2010 13:38

Thanks. Jsut saw these as didn't get online yesterday.

Ah, Futuremum - that makes sense.

Congratulations sparklyrainbow - Daniel is currently THE one.

But still open to suggestions!

Xavier is gorgeous
I like Mateo and Lucca too

thumbwitch · 23/05/2010 14:18

I know it's spelt differently in English but what about Felipe?
I love the name Daniel
and Alexandre
Xavier is quite cool but would be pronounced differently as well

LaTrucha · 23/05/2010 17:55

Mateo is very close to my crazy brother's name so a nono. DH vetoes Lucca and Xavier.

I'll ask about Felipe.

Samuel
Benjamin
David
Eric
Oscar
Saul
Victor
Marco
Lucas (although, if you are living in a Spanish speaking country this might not be wise, as the play on lucas/locas is apparently a schoolyard favourite)

Rockbird · 23/05/2010 23:03

I know a little Rico.

LaTrucha · 24/05/2010 16:14

If DD didn't sit at the dinner table saying , 'Mmm rico, rico' (tasty tasty) Rico would be nice. I think she may get confused!

We like David and Victor, but they're not at the top of the list.

We would quite like something Basque / Galician as DD's name is Galician and therefor unusual in Spain and here.

Emilio
Quinto
Fabio
Raul

LaTrucha · 24/05/2010 21:28

Raul is on the list but I can't quite see myself calling a DC this. It makes me think of Al Pacino in something like scarface giving orders to one of his hanchmen 'Rah-oouol'. Don't really know why.

I feel sure that you have already seen this webpage of Galician names but just in case you haven't...

Alberte might be a goer? It would fit nicely with the current trend of old-man name resurrection but I doubt it's popular yet.

Anton is a good one, easy to pronounce in every language but stands out less.

here is the Basque name page as well

schroedingersdodo · 25/05/2010 10:49

Joaquin? Sebastian?

LaTrucha · 25/05/2010 14:17

DH like Sebastian but I can't get Brideshead Revisited out of my mind.
