Beryl or Sybil? Using one would mean the other was off limits forever as they have such a similar sound, so which would you go for?
We love them both (they are dh's top 2 at the moment), so just wondering the general feeling and which you prefer? I think I prefer Beryl, but I have a Pearl already who is nearly 5, so maybe a bit themey?

(Dont worry Mildred fans - it is still in the running along with Jean, Juniper and Miriam!)

Please don't.

deaddei · 01/05/2010 10:05

I do like Jean in a strange way though.

tummytickler · 01/05/2010 10:09

No, don't is not an option you need to choose! I know they wont be everyones taste, but I have loved Beryl since I was a kid, and Sybil has grown on me over the last couple of years!

my mum had Beryl taken out if her name by deed poll she hated it that much. She was named after the midwife at the last moment by her dad and hated it all her life. It's kind of a harsh name IMO and I prefer Sybil as I quite like the shortened Syb, though it does sound a bit snippy!

Baconsarnie · 01/05/2010 10:13

I think I like Beryl more than Sybil, tho both are lovely. And unusual. Like Jean and Miriam too, tho not so keen on Mildred or Juniper!

thehillsarealive · 01/05/2010 10:14

dont like any of your names, sorry.

MamaLazarou · 01/05/2010 10:18

You're joking, right? Beryl, indeed.

tummytickler · 01/05/2010 10:23

Um, no - not joking! I think Beryl has a lovely gentle sound, and I do like Syb as a nn for Sybil.

I like Jean and Joan. I mentioned Joan to a workmate and she hated it :D

Gibbon · 01/05/2010 10:29

You may think the names are cute/quirky/different/chic.

Your child (and most other people) will forever be saying 'WTF were they thinking'

Be truly honest, would you have even considered these names a few years ago?

MarineIguana · 01/05/2010 10:33

Not so ken on Sybil but I love love love Beryl. I knew an inspirational old lady Beryl when I was little and it can be (and will be) shortened to Berry which is chic. Use Beryl!

tummytickler · 01/05/2010 10:35

Beryl I have loved since I was small, but could not convince dh 9 years ago, but he as since come 'round. Why is Ruby, Pearl and Coral ok, but Beryl not?
I think it is beautiful, and am genuinely it has had such a negative response!
Won't sway me though - just interested to see whether Beryl or Sybil was prefered!
DF - I love Joan, but it is too close to dh's name!

Gibbon names go round in a cycle so of course it was off the radar a few years ago. As Keith, Kevin and Louise are now. 10 or 15 years ago Ruby and Edith would have sounded bad, now they're everywhere. OP is simply at the cutting edge of appelation fashion!

Cthulhu · 01/05/2010 10:36

Miriam and Jean are ok and Juniper, um, not sure but sounds quite nice. However, Beryl, Sybil and Mildred are just dreadful! I like Pearl a lot so feel that it would be v unfair on Pearl's sister to be saddled with such a name.

DuelingFanjo · 01/05/2010 10:37

how about Sylvia?

dannas · 01/05/2010 10:39

I think you are trying to hard to be different. Very desperate. If you name your child Beryl, yes, she will be the only Beryl in the school but she have a dog awful name and will hate you for it.

MarineIguana · 01/05/2010 10:42

It's not dog awful. It is the name of a pretty precious stone (like Ruby) and can be shortened to something that is also pretty and funky.

Lionstar · 01/05/2010 10:43

I like Jean, and Miriam is pretty as is Pearl. DP wanted Joan/Joni on the list for DD.

DD goes to nursery with a Coryl, who is such a lovely little girl that I've really come round to it.

Beryl really gives me the Beryl the Peril vibes (showing my age)

tummytickler · 01/05/2010 10:44

Thank you Marine - love the nn Berry - it is too fabby for words.
How does Beryl Josephine Denise sound (middle names for family)

OP posts:
Gibbon · 01/05/2010 10:57

That's my point, personally, it does not make me like names more just because they have come full circle and are in fashion again.

zookeeper · 01/05/2010 11:00

why would you saddle your child with any of those awful names???

bandgeek · 01/05/2010 11:03

Definitley Jean out of all the names. I think it has an old film star glamour to it.

diddl · 01/05/2010 11:11

Sybil(le).

Beryl is awful as are Jean & Mildred-really really old lady.
