Beryl or Sybil

Beryl or Sybil? Using one would mean the other was off limits forever as they have such a similar sound, so which would you go for?
We love them both (they are dh's top 2 at the moment), so just wondering the general feeling and which you prefer? I think I prefer Beryl, but I have a Pearl already who is nearly 5, so maybe a bit themey?

(Dont worry Mildred fans - it is still in the running along with Jean, Juniper and Miriam!)

I know two lovely Beryls

one is my aunt who is known as Bernie.

the other is 25 and is known as Billy.

Neither have a problem with the name and I quite like it.

glastocat · 03/05/2010 14:11

tummytickler, Pearl is quite nice, but you just can't put Beryl with it because of Beryl the Peril. I think all your other suggestions are dreadful though. You did ask!

Beryl makes me think of a very solidly built 70 year old, with bad hair. Possibly a school dinner lady. Sybil makes me think of Fawlty Towers or Sybil Shepherd. No good connotations for either I'm afraid.

I think Miriam is very cute though. Mildred and Jean are not my cup of tea at all, and Juniper is a bit peculiar.

I do like Ethel (nn Effie) and Gertrude (nn Trudy) but then I'm biased on those since they are both my Grandmas.

...actually, the more I think about it, I REALLY like Effie, but I think it will remain a fantasy name!

glastocat · 03/05/2010 17:18

Sybil also reminds me of the movie Sybil, about a woman with Multiple Personality disorder.

tummytickler · 03/05/2010 18:47

I am only 'trying' to find some names that i love for dc - what is wrong with that? I could say people with Olivers and Emilys are not trying enough, but I wont.

Sybil every time. Need you ask?

imahappycamper · 03/05/2010 19:19

What about Vera?

booboobeedoo · 03/05/2010 19:27

Being practical, Beryl sounds too much like Pearl - that could cause confusion.

controlfreakery · 05/05/2010 00:20

your choices are wasted on this lot op... they clearly have no taste / limited horizons

ethel is a fab name... but sybil is nicer. enid is a winner too imo.

glory? margo? nora? rita? hilda?

If you have a Pearl then I really don't think you can have a Beryl. To be honest I don't like either. I like unusual names (I have one myself) but they are harder to carry so they have to be especially nice. Miriam is lovely, and I think would go really well with your other four (a bit of a bridge between the Old testament boys and the old lady girls too) and I quite like Jean.

thumbwitch · 05/05/2010 04:04

I prefer Sybil of the two. Don't like Beryl, never have (don't like Barbara either) although Beryl the Peril would actually sway me towards is (as would Minnie the Minx)

Having said that, I have just looked up Sybil because I knew it had some ancient Greek meaning - and it's been nicked by the computer industry! see here.

Still prefer it though - would you consider Sybilla as an option?

swanandduck · 05/05/2010 13:44

i think Sybil is the best of a very bad lot. Mildred and Beryl are truly awful. Miriam and Jean are very dated. Juniper just sounds silly.

GuntherMcKilocodie · 05/05/2010 14:03

I like Mildred and love Miriam. You are getting the rough end of the stick OP, which is a shame. I'm sure people don't like my name choices for my DDs. Tough shit frankly!
Personally I hate hate hate the name Ruby, reminds me of old ladies in the Gala Bingo with flabby arms in vest tops and pissy knickers, but seeing as it is one of the most popular names around, I appreciate that I may be in a minority.
Have to say though Juniper is silly. At least stick with a real name. I like Maud and Elsie of the old lady chic names BTW.

Pasiphae · 05/05/2010 14:33

Sybil over Beryl (less pretty and not with Pearl).

Huge fan of Juniper and Miriam, makes a nice change from the conventional/popular first names.

Jean is not for me.

Yes to Ethel and no to Enid (esp with Iris as a big sister).

Mildred is cool too. Have you been inspired by the worst witch?

LetThereBeRock · 05/05/2010 15:03

I'm with you on Ruby too Gunther.

tummytickler · 05/05/2010 16:17

no, not inspired by WW, but actually that us quite a nice connection!
controlfreakery - love Glory, Hilda and Rita.
Hilda had been our top name for the last 3 years, since I was pg with ds, but I am a bit bored with it now, maybe I just need to rethink it.
I know dh loves Hilda the best.
So, any opinions on Hilda - is that better than beryl and Sybil?
Think I am starting to think 'no' to Beryl - I do love it, but the gemstone thing with Pearl is worrying me!
I worry that Hilda and Rita will date really quickly, whereas to me Beryl and Sybil don't seem old lady, but Hilda and rita do, so maybe a bit more 'trendy' and so will sound crap in a couple of years. Does that make sense?

I know a Hilda ,shes in her 30s now and hates her name with a passion ...so just no

oceryo · 05/05/2010 16:26
  1. Miriam
  2. Sybil
  3. Beryl
  4. Rita
  5. Hilda
swanandduck · 05/05/2010 16:34

Hilda and Rita. Absolutely not. (And my Grandmother, who I adored, was called Hilda).
They both just scream 'Coronation Street' at me.

How about Mavis or Ena? (Joke!)

Sybil

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 05/05/2010 23:14

My middle name is Beryl and I hated it, so much so that I refused to claim it until I was 'grown up' ie around 35.

It is also my mum's name and is always shortened to 'Bare' by her sisters and friends

I would like it to comeback into fashion, tho' because she is such a lovely, strong woman

WorzselMummage · 06/05/2010 00:41

Hilda!
