If we have a boy we are thinking about calling him Tobias - we narrowed this down from loads of names and both really like it. However, am ultra paranoid about giving DC a "weird" name which will result in bullying in school, and ridicule in later life. (Tobias will be "sunday" name, I imagine he'll actually get called Toby)

What do you think and reasons?

Is it your first? My shortlist for DS1 was all weird and wonderful names, but we opted for a mainstream name in the end and so glad I did after a year of watching parents in baby groups wince as they introduced 'Octavius' or 'Thyme' (both boys - girls can get away with weirder names). Toby is lovely though - just go for that?

I like Tobias and would have liked to call my child that. It is a lovely name - Toby for short and not that popular. The only Toby I knew was a pupil and a lovely well manner child - so that name kind of stuck with me and its a little unusual. Good choice.

We had to opt for a Welsh name this time due to my dh family. But I was 'edging on that name.

We called our DS (now 4 months old) Tobias, so I love it although in reality he's only ever really been called Toby so far but Tobias is on birth certificate.
Only know one other Toby at the moment, a little boy at DD's pre-school, so don't think it's overly popular at the moment...although I thought that about DD's name when we chose it too & it's turned out to be super popular!
Only thing I would say if you're likely to have a big baby - DS was 11lbs 3oz when he was born and we have had a few jokey "Tubby Toby" comments already!! But then I think people can come up with nicknames for pretty much every name so not a lot you can do about it.

I really like it, and think it is nice to have a name that is a little unusual.

Prefer Toby to Tobias. I don't think the "ias" adds anything.

Love it. Tobias for formal, Toby for short. Both great, and great for him to have the option too.

I like Tobias and Toby.
It's not a weird name at all, it's just not Jake Jack Charlie Alfie or the rest of the top 10 at the moment, which imo is a good thing.

Fine. But he WILL have floppy hair, a posh accent, white trousers, deck shoes and a cardie slung over his shoulder. He will also say "yah" a lot.

I hate the name. Also there was a Tobias at my school who was called arse (as in 'tobiarse'). And I know of at least 3 dogs called Tobias.

Toby is infinitely better.

Just had new nephew called Toby. They avoided Tobias as they claimed it was too unusual. They wanted mainstream but one which wouldn't result in too many with the same name in the class. I like it but then I'm a biased auntie

My Toby is 7 - I obviously love the name ....There are no other Toby's in his school or in any of my friend's kids school. The other name we considered was Evan.

Friend who married and lives in Germany with her (German) husband- DS1 - Tobias, known as Toby. It's a nice name. He's in school in England now and going down well here too!

don't like Tobias (sorry, you asked!) but probably only because it's a bit high-brow, brings out the working-class inverted-snob in me. That's the only reason. I really like Toby.

Normally I'd be all for a formal bc name to fall back on, but with this one I really like Toby but not so keen on Tobias.

Tobias seems so .... old fashioned, different culture almost.

DH wouldn't have it on our list anyway so never got beyond pondering it briefly!

I love Toby - it was very high on my list but OH thought it sounded too posh with his surname and a freind who was also pregnant had already set her heart on it anyway. I do know quite a lot of dogs called Toby though.

I love both Tobias and Toby so am thinking Tobias on the Birth Certificate but called Toby.

It is definately on my shortlist for a boy.
