use a name that you loved but revealed to someone else who has now stolen it and is due before me?? my own fault for saying really, but she had already chosen her names for her little boy (spencer, jayden) and now has announced to everyone that she is going to call her little boy finlay...which is what i told her i was calling my baby boy....would u still use the name? im a bit annoyed esp as spencer and jayden are nowhere near similar to finlay imo...

I wouldn't use.

IMO Spencer and Jayden and Finlay are a good sibling set. I don't like any of them...

driven its her first boy, spencer and jayden were the names she had narrowed down herself and then announced to everyone he was actually definitely going to be finlay after id told her what id chosen....im not after opinions on the name, i know its popular and some people wont like it, what i want to know is would u still use a name and risk being seen as a copycat even tho u thought of the name first?

Who is she to you? Are you still likely to have much to do with her? It could be a bit odd if you still see a lot of eachother. But if you are also ditching her as a friend then I see no reason not to go for it. I like Finlay BTW and it's nothing like Jayden for sure!

i dont see her really, i work with her...im just really annoyed because it took me ages to find a name i liked (its my first child) and for her to casually tell me she was definitely going to use either spencer or jayden and then tell everyone else in work that actually he is going to be finlay..in fact, im more than annoyed, im pissed off...and its put a dampener on me using the name because she is due a month before me and if i use finlay, everyone in work will be saying 'oh thats what so and so called her little boy'...i really dont know what to do!!

In that case I'd stick with it. If anyone brings it up at work you can tell them that she must have really liked it when you told her it was YOUR choice. It will be yesterday's news before you return from maternity leave and one of you will probably change jobs and you will never think about it again.

On the other hand, if you change your choice, the name Finlay will haunt you forever!

really useful advice, its so annoying isnt it!! because i also dont want to sound petty by saying that was MY name!! iv found choosing names so hard, which is prob why it has bothered me so much...grrr

I quite like Spencer actually - maybe nick that off of her

Hopefully she'll change her mind and use the horrible Jayden.

I'd still use it. With a 'd' in it - Findlay.

And I'd never discuss the names I was thinking of for my babies again. You only get negative opinions or someone pinching it!

Use it. It's your choice and she has already changed her mind once. She might change it again. It's not as if she was related to you, which might be a bit more complicated.

i agree winky and i have def learnt my lesson!! i thought if i tell people what i like then no one will think im copying them if they've chosen that name, but no iv ended up being copied myself!!

and thank you everyone else too, ur also right happycamper she has already changed her mind once and i dont even see her let alone am related to her...had a bit of a shock when i told people in work monday that id chosen finlay for my little boy and they all said oh thats what is naming her boy!!

i think i will use it, i love it!!

My boss had a baby a few weeks before me, actually his wife. We had both chosen the same name. They used it and 6 weeks later I used it.

About one person at work commented on the fact it was the same name and that was not a negative comment.

I told mutual friends that we had already chosen that name and when chatting about the kids we referred to our daughters as 'our' and their name, so no confusion.

Since then we have both left the job and no longer see each other. Even if we still worked together or saw each other socially it wouldn't be any kind of problem.

I love my daughter's name and if I were you I would pick the name you like and not be discouraged by the fact your colleague has chosen it too.

Please do not let this spoil any of the fun of this wonderful time, it is not worth it. Use whatever name you like and if anyone says anything at all just say, yes, how flattering, I told XYZ about it and she liked it too! Or just smile and say, it's a great name isn't it.

I used to work with 2 guys who both had a daughter within 5 months of each other and gave her the same name and then 2 years later had a son and gave him the same name. A few people commented on it at the time but you'd be surprised how few people are actually interested in other people's kids! I think by the time the boys were born most people had forgotten the girls' name anyway!

The two men don't work together anymore and it's no issue at all.

If that's your name, don't be put off!

How irritating!

I would still use it if I were yo, but wold still feel annoyed.

I don't tell anyone in RL the names I pick for this reason. Plus I don't want their opinions while they can still give them iyswim? I have found if you wait till the baby is born, then name him/her, then tell everyone, they tend to keep their comments to themselves if they don't like it!

Use it. One of you will move on and you won't have any contact. If it was your sister or long time best friend I might say something different but in this instance it hardly matters.

I would still use it, it's not a very rare name so it doesn't matter. Would you feel the same if the name in question was James, Goerge or Tom?

FWIW Finlay is a nice name. Jayden and and Spencer are hideous.
