Ophelia Bottom (and variations on a theme)

She'll get teased at lot.

Collision · 20/03/2010 19:04

love it!

Met a 2y old Ophelia yesterday and she was adorable.

do it.

Ondine · 20/03/2010 19:27

I love it, i've always wanted to use it for a DD since I was a child.

But as ronx said it's easy to make a cheap joke out of it. Also i've seen drag acts called Ophelia Tits & Opehlia Bottom so the joke is well known.

All in all I don't think I would use it anymore.

allyfe · 20/03/2010 19:32

I like it too. Had never thought about O-feel-ya though!

Kingsroadie · 20/03/2010 19:33

Love it but can't use it as one of husband's ex girlf was called that - some may think me silly but I just can't! Also she did go bonkers and meet a terribly tragic end in Hamlet...

Maggie00 · 20/03/2010 19:35

Awful for a few reasons.
She was such a sad put upon kind of character who drowned herself in a river feeling resentful. or is that just my interpretation?
Also, it sounds a bit like oh feel ya.
It's the sort of name (like Cleopatra) that you can't be ordinary with. If you have mouse hair, work in a bank and have to introduce yourself as Ophelia, there is an anomaly of sorts there. JMO before I am flamed.

On the plus side, it can be Lia for short. I know of one as well. So perhaps it is become a little bit more mainstream, in which case it wouldn't really matter iykwim.

I think it's pretty, but I wouldn't like the association with the Shakespeare character. It's not a happy name for that reason.

SherbetDibDab · 22/03/2010 10:44

I heard of a Ophelia Myfanwy - always makes me giggle and so would put me off the name.

StepSideways · 22/03/2010 10:47

It's a lovely name, but consider teasability, and how well does it 'go' with her family name?

blogpage · 22/03/2010 11:28

I think it's a bit OTT.

Pasiphae · 22/03/2010 11:38

I sort of like it, but I don't like the shakespearian's Ophelia.
I also think that it can be a bit "precious" and twee.

5DollarShake · 22/03/2010 14:56

I love O names (Odette, Odile), but agree with Maggie that she would have to be out of the ordinary to carry it off.

Plus, it does have unhappy connotations...

MamaLazarou · 22/03/2010 14:59

I like it a lot.

FourOfFour · 22/03/2010 15:13

I love it, but agree with OPs, even if it sounds OK with your surname, if she marries a man with any noun as a surname she will have a terrible time.

Maggie00 · 22/03/2010 17:29

Ophelia Cox.

minipie · 22/03/2010 19:50

What would be the (inevitable given length of name) nickname?

Feely?

Offy?

Not keen on the suicide associations either.

JeMeSouviens · 22/03/2010 19:54

It's our forerunner if DC2 is a girl. I love it. Kids will always tease others based on their name and come up with strange nn's. I had one friend call me Nagasaki!

I'm thinking of Fee or Effie for nn

PatTheHammer · 22/03/2010 19:55

Love it, love it, love it...........Go on, be brave!

CarGirl · 22/03/2010 19:59

My Octopus (soft toy I made at school when I was 7) is called Ophelia. Lovely name go for it.

cakeywakey · 22/03/2010 20:09

It is a lovely name but can come across as a little pretentious. But if you love it, go for it

HerHonesty · 22/03/2010 20:57

love it, i think it might be the new amelia.

MinnieMalone · 23/03/2010 12:46

Very pretty but Ophelia was such a pathetic character, why would you name a little girl after her?

MarianneD · 24/03/2010 09:11

I think this is a beautiful and thought about it if we'd had a girl (also we are big fans of The Band song!).

Don't know if I'd have the guts though!

boodleboot · 24/03/2010 10:14

the main character of my fav ever film {pans labyrinth} is calle Ofelia and for that reason i love it...fifi for a little one.
