It seems to me that every small girl where I live has a name beginning with S, so anything that isn't Sarah, Sophie,a variant of Sorcha or Sabrina would stand out! The only Jacinta I know is 18. What about Imelda, that is the same vintage?

I agree that Jacinta is considered quite chavvy in Ireland. It's also considered quite a middle aged name, as it was very popular for new babies in the 1960s.

This proves my suspicion that Cork is far removed from Ireland as far as baby names are concerned!

Sorry, but in Dublin there's a saying 'she's a real Jacinta', meaning a bit rough.

I've heard that saying swanandduck lol

No Stellas in Dublin so?

Report
swanandduck · 16/03/2010 16:18

Stella certainly has no negative connotations in Dublin.

Hate it. I'm in Ireland tho! I know a lovely one who goes by Jess.

StLeger, are you a member of the facebook group "I'm Irish, but more importantly, I'm from Cork"??????

Report
swanandduck · 16/03/2010 16:21

A lot of Jacintas used to shorten their name to Jackie when I was at school, because they hated their name.

I think Cynthis is virtually the same name, right? Comes from Hyacinth too.

Report
MaggieSilver · 16/03/2010 16:27

I quite like Hyacinth. It's austere and floral.

I'm from Dublin and every time I see this thread I end up with "Jaaccciinnta" in a VERY Dublin accent going around in my head.

Report
MaggieSilver · 16/03/2010 16:41

I wouldn't hold it against the Jacinta herself, but I'd expect her mother to be a rosary bead-clacking holy roller. But maybe names that sound gack to us will come back. I have seen Bernadette complimented on this board! I think of a bad-tempered nun when I see that name. Apologies to all the lovely Bernadettes.

In Meath here and yes 'tis chavvy! Wasn't there some comedienne who used to dress up in one of tesec costumes and go on about her rival Jaciiiiinta O'Brien beating here in the feises?

Report
chipmonkey · 16/03/2010 17:14

mind you, if you shout any name out in a thick Dub accent it sounds bad!

MaggieSilver · 16/03/2010 17:23

So can we agree that it is old fashioned? See,I'm not from Cork, I just live here and observe its fabulousness. I'm from Belfast, where the name 'Millie' is not to be used by the middle classes... I know a Bernadette in her late twenties, her mum is English and holy. (How are the small chipmonkeys?)

Pinkstripes - I am north! Coolock to be precise. You?

You will understand my shame at having taken Jacinta as confirmation name but in 1975 it wasn't that bad!

Stleger, one of the small chipmonkeys is now as tall as me!

MIL is a religious nut very holy and SIL is Bernadette Concepta. She has never forgiven MIL for this!

I have 2 kids taller than me, and one is growing like a weed. I know a Concilia and a Perpetua, but she is a nun. (Could we do a spoof St Patrick's day thread on Concepta?)

Yes pinkstripes, it is June Rogers! in her Irish dancing cost-ew-am
