Maureen....can you imagine looking down at cute newborn, "hello ickle Maureen".

CheerfulYank · 18/08/2010 23:02

That's funny, because I love Dulcie, Matilda, Esme, and Cordelia, tanleigh. Virginia's ok, but not Tabitha.

MillyR · 18/08/2010 23:03

I know a baby Edith and a baby Mabel. I quite like Hilda and Alfwin as names, but fortunately I have had my children so won't be imposing such unpopular names on any babies!

EvilTwins · 18/08/2010 23:04

Gertrude. It was my Granny's name and she hated it - thought it was old fashioned even then (she would be 103 if she was still with us) When my sister was born, in 1973, my parents toyed with Trudy as a name and Granny wouldn't have it - too much like her name and therefore hideous.

Can't see that one making a comeback.

Her sister was Beatrice, which I love. Poor Granny got a rough deal...

MillyR · 18/08/2010 23:04

Cordelia is nice. A bit too posh to go with my last name, but it would be lovely for a baby.

montmartre · 18/08/2010 23:14

I know a very young Geraldine- I was most surprised!
I know a little Gertie too, but I love that as it reminds me of ET.
I know a wee Maureen and a Diane too.

I don't know anyone under the age of 60 named Eunice...

zozzle · 18/08/2010 23:38

triplets - whats wrong with the name Zoe and why do people think its a modern name? I love it - it`s a saints name (two saints actually I think) and has been used for thousands of years, and is even used in the New Testament (in original Greek) in the context of eternal life - so ten times more classic than the old lady names IMO!!

Or have I misunderstood you?

superfrenchie1 · 18/08/2010 23:39

love all the old lady names. dd's name has been mentioned above a few times, favourably thank goodness.

my favourite old lady name is PEGGY. i wanted to call dd Peggy (my nan's name - she is Margaret Olive, shortened to Peggy), or Pearl.

don't understand why you'd want to start a thread listing the names you don't like though, kinda vicious. each to their own and all? i'm glad so many people have expressed the opposite opinion!

it'll be the next generation starting in about 10 yrs when those other names will come back - the ones babies were named in the 50s. Linda, Karen, Susan etc. Then Olive and Alfie and Iris will look dated and a bit dull... and so it goes...

midlandsmumof4 · 19/08/2010 00:12

Fanny, Zillah (although that does grow you) & my friend would say Maureen. Smile.

sexybrunettemotherof5 · 19/08/2010 00:29

Beverly
Tracey
Sharon
Karen

genieinabottle · 19/08/2010 00:55

I do not like these and won't be sad to see them completely fade:

  • Margaret
  • Edna
  • Mabel
  • Gertrude
  • Ethel
  • Beryl
rosietoes · 19/08/2010 03:56

Bertha
cousin just named poor dd Lily Bertha

FellatioNelson · 19/08/2010 05:59

Oh God, yes, Eunice has to be the worst.

Numberfour · 19/08/2010 07:07

Eunice is awful, I agree!

The names Sharon, Tracy, Karen - they all seem to be about 20 something year old names, maybe 30 ish!! But I cannot imagine a grandmother Tracy - definitely Mabel, Maude, Millicent, Audrey, Edwina - who would EVER call their child Edwina -ewwwwwww!

pcworld · 19/08/2010 07:24

Not too keen on Winifred. (Apols to anyone on here called Winifred Grin Or Agnes (although that is curiously ok if one is French).

tigermoth · 19/08/2010 08:12

choosyfloosy, I am so happy to hear that :)

JebusBuiltMyHotQuads · 19/08/2010 08:15

Heh...my nan, mum, and 2 aunties names have been mentioned on here. My mum's quite a few times!

Gertrude was always used by my friend as I when we played at being old ladies. It was the most hideous name we could think of at the age of 8 Blush

JebusBuiltMyHotQuads · 19/08/2010 08:17

as and

MerryMarigold · 19/08/2010 09:01

How about all those flower names?

Lavinia (is it a flower, sounds like one)
Primrose
Delia
Petunia

Oh, Daisy and May are quite fashionable I guess...

Ariesgirl · 19/08/2010 10:26

Beryl and Pearl make me shudder. I know there are a fair few little Pearls now, but all I can think of is that old witch in Last of the Summer Wine who was even worse than Nora Batty.

BuntyPenfold · 19/08/2010 10:35

Bridget-awful awful name

Bobbalina · 19/08/2010 11:12
