Regina - how do you pronounce it?

Ok, so is it Ruh-geena or Ruh-jyna?

Because I can't give my child a name that is a perfect rhyme for female genitalia.

I agree with the poster who said use Reginald as it is, or, what about the original Reginald's surname as a middle name? My feeling if you don't want to do this is sod the lot of them, just use Regina anyway. Middle names are pretty redundant after you've told everyone a new baby's name in my view.

I am sure the grandfather if he knew would be mortified if his little granddaughter was teased because your DH wanted to honour him! There are lots of nice names out there sadly this isnt one of them. I adored my grandmother and we were very close but she had a dreadful name (she herself hated it) so no way used it or any derivative for my dds. She would have been horrified if I had

Pronounced Regeeeena

motherlovebone · 11/03/2010 22:26

Sugarcubes song, Regina.

Nothing wrong with the name.

Genuine, punchy, cool imo.

Maybe not a disaster while she's a child, but as a teen, she won't thank you for it.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 14/05/2020 00:53

The pronunciation of Regina as in Elizabeth Regina (The Queen) rhymes with vagina which could be a source of teasing in the UK

whatausername · 14/05/2020 01:11

She'll be asking for a deed poll for her 9th birthday 😂 Just give her the middle name Reggie and be done

Liddell · 14/05/2020 01:30

I would choose Gina, or perhaps Rina.

Liddell · 14/05/2020 01:31

Rena

In Spanish we pronounce it Reh-he-nah which sound absolutely beautiful and I've met quite a few and they never ever got teased. It's increasing in popularity within the Spanish speaking community and girls with the name are never teased even if the word for vagina in Spanish is the same as in English and it does still rhyme in Spanish.

It's a beautiful name that I've considered a million times but I cannot imagine hearing people say it as "Re-gee-nah" for the rest of my child's life

quarantinedwithcurry · 14/05/2020 01:38

Also since someone mentioned it. A girl at my work is called Estefanía and we actually call her Fanny. We work in the tourism industry with a lot of British people coming in every single day and no ones has ever bat an eyelid at the name so that's something I've never understood Blush

Wheresthebiffer2 · 14/05/2020 01:44

Reh -jean- uh

Aclh13 · 14/05/2020 05:03

Reh-gee-nah
Reh-GI-nah sounds rude 🙄

florascotia2 · 14/05/2020 09:58

Following up Mathanxiety's point, what about a female version of 'Reginald' from another language'?

Rinalda is quite pretty and is the female version of Rinaldo which is the Italian form of Reginald.

Torre Rinalda ('Rinalda's Tower') is a busy holiday resort in Italy, but there are worse associations than that ....

This is such an awful name!

peperethecat · 14/05/2020 10:41

Onthehamsterwheel · 14/05/2020 10:56
