Regina - how do you pronounce it?

Ok, so is it Ruh-geena or Ruh-jyna?

Because I can't give my child a name that is a perfect rhyme for female genitalia.

As suggested,how about Gina?

legallyblond · 10/03/2010 09:38

I'm afraid that I have always heard English speakers pronounce it Regina as in Vagina. Not good...

Ellica · 10/03/2010 09:41

my mums name, and she never had any issues with it! i love it but slightly biased
oh and its prounounced Reg ee na (with reg rhyming with veg from vegatables just for clarity!)

fanjolina · 10/03/2010 09:42

Children get the piss ripped out of them at school for middle names, not just first names so I wouldn't even entertain it as a middle name tbh.

Unfortunately all other tribute to Reginald seem equally as bad - Reggie etc.

Did his grandad have a middle name you could try feminising instead?

Fayrazzled · 10/03/2010 09:46

My husband's aunt is called this and it is prnounced "Ruh-gee-na" with a hard g sound.

ImSoNotTelling · 10/03/2010 09:49

I knew a regeena.

I have to say, when people met her it took quite a while of people visibly opening and closing their mouths with their brains working hard to remember how to pronounce her name. Because her name was regina (vagina) but not pronounced like that IYSWIM.

I wouldn't do it no way.

Confuzled · 10/03/2010 12:28

I never knew Regina Spektor was Ruhgeena. In fact, DH and his mates all call her The Vagina Inspector.

Yes, I am so proud.

The English pronounciation is Gyna, though, I've heard the Queen called Elizabeth Ruhgyna before. Dunno if that's latin or greek or what, but that's the only way I've ever head it said.

StrictlyKatty · 10/03/2010 15:57

I adore it. I love Regina Spektor and would say it Reh-Gina so don't really see a problem!

missytequila · 10/03/2010 18:53

I know 2 women named regina. Its re-gee-na, like gina with a re...

I have never ever heard anyone confusing it or saying it as 'vagina' pronunciation. Anyone who pronounces it this wrong way is totally uneducated!

I do not think its bad at all, and if you are at all worried, middle name solves the problem.

I also hate thinking about the 'teasing' aspect of children. All children will get teased at some point for something. Some will get teased over their name, yes, but then if you have a simple easy name that won't get made fun of, they will find something else.

My best friend got teased over name. I got teased for having big lips and a flat chest or because someone lifted my skirt and showed my knickers... there will always be something, kids are cruel.

mopsyflopsy · 10/03/2010 19:08

And some very common names are just as prone to teasing - think Will /Willy .

I personally don't like the name Regina but would pronounce it Re-geena if that is how its owner wanted it pronounced. Vagina doesn't even come to my mind.

muggglewump · 10/03/2010 19:16

I thought it was Reg-ee-na, but only because Phoebe in Friends pronounces it that way, when saying Regina Philange (how do you spell that?)

Don't use it though, it's bad and you may well get the Regina/Vagina thing. Just not worth the risk.

Middle name if you absolutely must, but then don't use middle name, ever.

toadstool · 10/03/2010 20:44

How about French style, Regine? Would DH like it?

ellesabe · 10/03/2010 20:51

Re-JEE-nuh

pranma · 10/03/2010 20:57

How about just Gina [as in Ford]?

Lovethesea · 10/03/2010 21:14

I would say it both ways depending on context - regeeeeeeena if in a latin phrase and like vagina for a british name. I have heard the other european pronounciations with a hard G but wouldn't say that if reading the name out unless I already knew to use that accent with it.

I have to say I would look long and hard for an alternative name to honour said relation, even for a middle name. I remember the excitement of sharing middle names at school, we used to use them in games we played like Red Letter. It was bad enough for the kids who didn't have a middle name, let alone one that screams out vagina at such an impressionable age!

seeker · 10/03/2010 21:31

Call her something nice and then start marshalling your arguments so that you can have them ready in case the next one is a boy. I'm all for family names but there are limits.....

By the way, in my head the name is Regeena, but the word the choir of Westminster Abbey sings after a Coronation is Reg-ina. Both with a soft G.

notanumber · 10/03/2010 22:17

Hmmmm. Already have one DS (who has other dead grandad's name as a MN) and DD will be the last so no chance of hanging on to the name for a future son.

It is really important to DH to honour his grandfather like this and I am happy to accomodate as I don't really mind that it's ugly (as will chose beautiful first name) but I have to say that the whole "vagina" thing does seem pretty much a deal breaker.

Someone suggestime Regine. Does that sound like "regime" though?

Oh god! Am trapped in rhyming hell.

Shame that our surname is Bottom, too. as that makes the the whole "vagina" business sound even worse.

OP posts:
notanumber · 10/03/2010 22:18

Obviously am joking about Bottom.

OP posts:
allaboutme · 10/03/2010 22:22

I would say it rhymes with vagina
maybe call her first name Fanny so she can be fanny vagina bottom to match it all together?

I agree with just Gina.

Schulte · 11/03/2010 08:27

Reginalda?

Reginaldine?

Reginella?

SmileysPeepul · 11/03/2010 17:07

Just give her Reginald as a middle name. Seriously it will be a nice talking point when she's older.
I met a girl called Steve once, as a teengare it was quite cool.

Irather have Reginald then Regina with it's vagina associations.

oR Gina, that's a good compromise.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2010 18:54

Thing is, Regina isn't a feminine version of Reginald, it just shares a few letters. Reginald means "ruler's advisor".

I would steer completely clear of Regina. It's a terrible thing to saddle a poor girl with a name like that, even a middle name.
