So, Tarquin. Is it really that bad?

Just a disclaimer: I'm not even pregnant yet with dc3...

For a girl, I've already shortlisted Betty or Constance (shortened to Coco), with Primrose as a middle name.

For a boy, I quite like Tarquin , but I would shorten to Tarquie or Quin, both of which I think are rather sweet.

However, at softplay last week there was a little boy called Tarquin and all the mums I was with were making quite unkind comments about his name, and consequently his mother.

Is it such a bad name?

just use Quin, please

hildegarde · 08/03/2010 20:56

...yees. It's like the stereotypical "ridiculously posh" name. Sorry.

Quentin is vile too, sorry, but I do like Quin. Ish. Tarquin is just a no-no though. You may as well give him Fauntleroy as a middle name.

expatinscotland · 08/03/2010 21:11

Please stop smoking crack NOW.

It's really not good as it leads people to consider horrid names for future children.

dizzydixies · 08/03/2010 21:12

Expat

Lonnie · 08/03/2010 21:13

I dont like it either but Like Quin Quintin and Quinlain

annasophia · 08/03/2010 21:38

I have a Quentin, which we sometimes shorten to Quen or Quin. I obviously love it .

I'm not keen on Tarquin, it sounds very English and won't travel as well into other languages imo.

kittywise · 08/03/2010 21:40

jesus, it's hideous

randomimposter · 08/03/2010 21:41

yes think it is that bad.

Quin is ok though.

Girls' name are nice - good luck

sonniebonnie · 08/03/2010 21:41

Not sure about Tarquin, but Quin is cool!

randomimposter · 08/03/2010 21:42

girls' nameSSSSSS - sorry too much vino!

Thissideofchannel · 08/03/2010 21:50

I've never heard of Tarquin... not sure if I like it.

But I love Quentin (quite popular in France).

avaj · 08/03/2010 21:53

No, no, thrice no!
Quinn is pretty cute though.

LadyCressida · 08/03/2010 22:47

Tarquin is my 'test name' I try on my DH to check he's still listening to me...

The minute he says 'yeah that's cool' I know he isn't!

It's fine for a character in a story but I can't imagine anyone real pulling it off, sorry!

Vivia · 09/03/2010 10:00

It's the name that DH and I use if we're talking about a person so posh and fake that they're almost a parody of upper class twittery. 'Tarquin Cuthburt-Smythe'. Apologies to anyone with that name or with DC of that name. Further, I had a teacher called Tarquin who was revealed in the News of the World to be a sex pest.

Posh twit or sex pest? Please, OP, never use it - it's hideous!

CaptainPicardsPineapple · 09/03/2010 10:07

In a word, yes.

Don't do it to him. You may love it and thinks cute/different/whatever but you won't be the only person who addresses him by his name and there are very few people who will like it enough not to rip the piss out of him and this will make him miserable. It would be cruel.

I'm really sorry but I find Tarquin hilarious. I would imagine if Hyacinthe Bucket were around today she'd name a baby Tarquin. But that's just my view, others no doubt love it.

Quite like just Quinn though!

Like Betty or Coco.

CuppaTeaJanice · 09/03/2010 11:26

The first thing that sprang to mind was Melanie Sykes in that Boddington advert from about 10 years ago...

'Eh, Tarquin, are your trolleys on t'right way round?'

I do like Quinn, although there is a female character in Glee called Quinn, so I wouldn't be surprised if it became popular as a girls name in the future.

Coco is a lovely name, much better than Betty, which has Ugly Betty/Sweaty Betty connotations.

5DollarShake · 09/03/2010 11:32

Is Tarquin really the best you can come up, bearing in mind ALL the boys' names in the world?

I do NOT get Betty at all - again, with all the girls' names out there, can you honestly, hand on heart, say this is the nicest / prettiest / loveliest / best / delete as applicable name out there??

hellokitty123 · 09/03/2010 11:46

I wouldn't choose Tarquin personally, but it doesn't offend me and I certainly wouldn't make "unkind comments about the boy and his mum" simply because I happen not to like his name!

Quin is very cool and makes a nice alternative to the ever popular Fin.

I'm not keen on Betty either, I'm afraid, although I do like Constance.

DulcieVox · 09/03/2010 11:52

it wouldn't be my first choice.....

Soapsy · 09/03/2010 12:03

I dislike an awful lot of the names I see people raving about being fantastic.

Someone said Tarquin is a sex pest's name - well Primrose West was a murderer. There's always some negative connotation to any name you might choose.

If you like Tarquin, then why not? What business is it of anyone elses? But, the fact that you appear to be embarrassed about this particularly name suggest to me you are not 100% convinced either.

zozzle · 09/03/2010 13:06

Yes it's that bad.
