So, Tarquin. Is it really that bad?

Just a disclaimer: I'm not even pregnant yet with dc3...

For a girl, I've already shortlisted Betty or Constance (shortened to Coco), with Primrose as a middle name.

For a boy, I quite like Tarquin , but I would shorten to Tarquie or Quin, both of which I think are rather sweet.

However, at softplay last week there was a little boy called Tarquin and all the mums I was with were making quite unkind comments about his name, and consequently his mother.

Is it such a bad name?

It's that bad and then some.

NorbertDentressangle · 09/03/2010 14:59

Sorry but you can't do that to a child. Tarquin?!.

The only Tarquin I know is an actor, daaahling, so that almost excuses him

ilovepiccolina · 09/03/2010 15:02

Tarquin does fit into a sort of narrow category. There was some interview recetnly with Nigella Lawson where she said she was going to Horatia & Tarquin's wedding. So if you move in the kind of circles where people call their children Horatia and Nigella, then Tarquin would be fine.

TBH I quite like it - it's way better than many of the more modern boys' names. It's been out of favour because it did have 'Hooray Henry' connotations, so you don't hear it as much these days. Due for a renaissance?

kneedeepinthedirtylaundry · 09/03/2010 15:07

Baby Jesus don't do it to the poor male twinkle in your eye!

linconlass · 09/03/2010 15:25

i like it !!!also fabien

expatinscotland · 09/03/2010 15:40

we're getting another cat next month.

a male kitten.

i want to call him tarquin.

NorbertDentressangle · 09/03/2010 15:47

Its a cool name for a kitten but not a for a child

AllieW · 09/03/2010 19:49

Not at all keen. Far too likely to give rise to teasing.

Not keen on Quin either. It's too close to a slang word for women's bits for my liking.

nickytwotimes · 09/03/2010 19:52

Oh, please do not call a human child Tarquin.

It screams 'I'm trying ever so hard to be posh'.

tartyhighheels · 09/03/2010 19:55

what nickytwotimes said

it's a real try hard and daft to give boys cute names - they grow into men.....

2old4thislark · 09/03/2010 19:56

Hideous! You can only use if your child will got to private school (preferably boarding).
If he will have to mix with the hoi polloi at the local comp, you may as well tattoo 'bully me now' on his forehead..........

I now a Quinn and he is lovely.

Tarquin is hideous and could be seen as verging on abuse!

LaurieFairyCake · 09/03/2010 20:07

I don't like Betty either unless you call her Elizabeth and then use it as a family name

Not keen on Constance Primrose together either - it's just too try hard

Tarquin is a fantastic name for a horse or a large dog

Quentin has not come back into fashion whatever mumsnetters say - it's still george's mad scientist dad in the famous five.

AllieW · 09/03/2010 20:11

LaurieFairyCake, he was her Uncle actually, although your point still stands. (His wife was Aunt Fanny - with a bit of luck that won't come back into fashion either!)

GladioliBuckets · 09/03/2010 20:36

Yes, it's as bad as Kevin TBH.

coffeeaddict · 09/03/2010 20:38

Wasn't he father to George and uncle to the others? (appreciates this is not quite the point of the thread )

Northernlurker · 09/03/2010 20:40

I think the only thing worse than Tarquin is probably Ptolemy. I met a Ptolemy playing up at a NCT sale once 'Do stop that and come here Ptolemy' is one of the funniest things you will ever hear

LaurieFairyCake · 09/03/2010 20:46

He was her Dad.

Hulababy · 09/03/2010 21:11

I don't like it TBH

NorbertDentressangle · 09/03/2010 21:23

Thanks to an old thread on here, every time I hear Ptolemy I think Ptwat.

chegirlshadabloodynuff · 09/03/2010 21:23

My lovely friend (right ol east ender) is utterly convinced that Tarquin is what all posh (middle class) people call their children.

I have tried to update her on Finn, Noah etc (lovely names btw) but she wont have any of it

sophiesmummie · 09/03/2010 21:53

I've never met a Tarquin and am not that keen on the name.

My ds2 is Quentin, so I hope it doesn't become too 'fashionable' .

cupofteaplease · 10/03/2010 19:53

Well, thank you for all your opinions

As I said in OP, I'm not even pregnant yet so it is only a hypothetical name. But then I also got told no, no, no when I suggested Bear, Clover or Primrose on an older thread- I think I must just have a weird taste in names!!
