Who is Liberty?

My husband and I are finally getting serious about choosing a name... I'm 39 weeks tomorrow so time could be running out!

A top runner is Liberty... and Libby for short. But, I'm not sure what this name evokes. Could you let me know what the name conjures up for you and what kind of girl someone called Liberty is?

The other names on the shortlist are: Rosa, Lorna, and Alice.

TBH my first thought was 'brat'. Sorry.

fruitshootsandheaves · 02/03/2010 22:18

only one I can think of is a statue

JeMeSouviens · 02/03/2010 22:31

I only know one who will be in her mid 20sish by now. Her parents were hippies and surfers. That's what the name conjures up for me. I like it.

Lotster · 02/03/2010 22:37

I think Liberty would be a tall, beautiful free spirited girl with an inate sense if style. My faaaaave name but husband wasn't sure!

MrsBadger · 02/03/2010 22:40

Southern US brat, does beauty pageants

the rest of your shortlist, however, are ace.

I have a beautiful friend called Liberty and if I had a girl that's what I would name her

domesticslattern · 02/03/2010 22:49

I like the name Libby. But Liberty would be a revolting brat. Sorry.

To me Libby is the nasty cheerleader from Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Liberty is the mental baby sister of Georgia from "Angus Thongs and Full frontal snogging"

Slur · 03/03/2010 00:00

Liberty is lovely. Though personally I prefer as a middle name. I don't think brat, I think sweet and perhaps artistic.

Libby is likely overweight I'm afraid.

Its the double 'bb's

foreverastudent · 03/03/2010 00:42

Posh Spice's sister called her daughter that.

I like it but maybe as more of a middle name.

Lorna is much better, very underused.

boodleboot · 03/03/2010 08:22

I know a really lovely and beautiful Lorna that i work with....go with that instead. much more unusual.

GOOOOOD LUCK. xxxxxx

growingweeble · 03/03/2010 09:21

Thank you all very much!

I like the idea of Libby being overweight because of the 'bb'. Poor little Libby.

Still not sure what to do. I don't want to give my little girl a name that's associated with a spoilt brat... but on the other hand, the person carries the name and if she isn't a brat (which of course she won't be , then people won't think that.

But, it still doesn't feel quite right to me. DH is the one who really likes Liberty for the reasons others have said they like it.

I really didn't think choosing a name would be so fraught

Thinking cap back on...

I love it

Libby the baby/toddler is cute and lovable

Liberty the schoolgirl is confident and popular an all rounder.

Liberty the teen has long flowing hair and is possibly musical or arty

Liberty the young adult is a confident proffesional

It also sounds good with a Dr. in front of it.

Good morning I'm Dr Liberty ....

Bucharest · 03/03/2010 10:44

Liberty is, as pps have said, Victoria Beckham's niece.
Nuff said.

zozzle · 03/03/2010 11:35

mmm name could go either way for me - naff or musical/arty - but am swinging towards naff.

bellissima · 03/03/2010 11:37

And who was the man who shot her?

BessieBoots · 03/03/2010 11:45

Lovely, but I prefer Rosa. Libby will ALWAYS be the chick from Neighbours to me, though...

ReadingTeaLeaves · 03/03/2010 12:09

I've come across a couple of Libertys who were adopted from orphanages in Romania and given the history there I think it's a nice sentiment. I think it's a lovely name, but without a 'story' behind it it might be a tiny bit pretentious.

If you love it though I think you should bite the bullet. I certainly don't think she would have any trouble with the name.

BornToFolk · 03/03/2010 12:10

I get brat from Liberty too...not sure why as I've never met one.
I really dislike Libby as a nickname too, I just think it's got an ugly sound.

I really like the rest of your shortlist though, in particular Alice but this might have a bit of a resurgence with the new Alice in Wonderland film coming out.

shoobidoo · 03/03/2010 12:32

I find Liberty very American/common sounding.

Libby is cute for a little toddler, but it lacks elegance and grace for an older girl imo. (perhaps because of the bb sound?)

ChynaDoll2006 · 03/03/2010 13:24

Yuk. I have met three Libertys in my life. One was a terrible bully, one was a terrible showoff, and the other was just really really annoying.

Also, they were all blonde. (Didn't mean that's a bad thing)
