Love it. Hate Alys though.

janeite · 27/02/2010 22:35

It is gorgeous. Can't really see the point of messing around with the spelling.

Like Alice, but not Alys - would always have to be spelt out, as everyone would expect the 'standard' spelling.

Fimbow · 27/02/2010 22:37

Lovely name, prefer Alice to Alys

boodleboot · 27/02/2010 22:41

DH loooooves Alice and i love the sound of it but not the way it looks a - lice....did think i might have been stretching a bit hpoing to change spelling tho

I like it - it's cute for a baby but classic and sensible for an adult. Sounds very pretty imo

Alys looks Welsh! Or is it just made up?

Personally I would stick with Alice but Alys doesn't look awful. Reminds me of Carys (which I really like)

daisyj · 27/02/2010 23:37

Love Alice. I like spelling of Alys, too. I read a children's book, think it might have been Alison Uttley's A Traveller in Time, where one of the characters is called Alice and there is some kind of discussion using the name to make the point that people used to choose their own spelling. It's only relatively recently that we have been so prescriptive about how to spell names.

dogstar · 27/02/2010 23:45

Alys is Welsh btw.

Love either spelling.

stressheaderic · 28/02/2010 16:23

I went to school with an Alyce.

Alice is my daughter's middle name, I love it. Posh without being pretentious.

hf128219 · 28/02/2010 16:27

My dd's middle name too. Love it.

hocuspontas · 28/02/2010 16:52

dd1(18) is Alice and no one has ever made the lice joke (to her face anyway!)

wilkos · 28/02/2010 16:56

next dc would have been Alice, and still will if we get a suprise in 2 weeks time

according to 20 week scan we will be having a ds!

love the name

DorotheaPlenticlew · 28/02/2010 16:57

Good name. On our list at the mo.

I think of it as a name that works well in adulthood/middle age too -- that's important to me! Not sure if you care about that but just mentioning because another poster had the opposite view It maybe depends on whether you've met grown-up Alices who wear it well ... I have known a few.

BuzzingNoise · 28/02/2010 16:57

I don't like ALice at all. Just makes me think of the song 'Alice, who the f**k is Alice'.
Alys is even worse.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 28/02/2010 17:11

Never heard that song!

rainfatclouds · 28/02/2010 17:13

just what I was going to say buzz

who the fk is alice

but isn't that gimmer now? nobody knows it any more

BuzzingNoise · 28/02/2010 17:13

It was a copy of 'living next door to Alice' that came out about 15 years ago. It wasn't very good but it pops into my head whenever I hear the name.

BuzzingNoise · 28/02/2010 17:13

what does gimmer mean?

pollylongstockings · 28/02/2010 17:15

old I think

rainfatclouds · 28/02/2010 17:15

old, old

I think Alice is absolutley beautiful!!....we have an Alice and soooo many people comment on how lovely her name is. It is quirky, timeless and traditional. x Soooo many American names are floating about at the moment, so Alice is refreshing x
