What do you think of this for a boy.

My mum's friend has a son called Thor and I thought it was quite nice.

Dp and I really struggle with boy's names.

Ds has a name that I wasn't too keen on but it does suit him. (and it was a compromise as I really didn't like Dp's suggestion of Miles)

I want to try and avoid that if Dc2 is a boy.

now i've heard it all!!!! there cannot truly be a more awful name. he's the god of fucking THUNDER for &$£*(£ i can't even type anymore i'm so flabbergasted.

god forbid he be a meek and mild child.

In certain parts of Scotland (Orkney, Shetland) they go for Norse names as they used to be Scandinavian. However even there I've never heartd of a Thor. Magnus, Sigurd, Erland, possibly Thorfinn...but unless you're in the Northern Isles I wouldn't. However, just to back you up - I really dislike Miles

Ah see this is interesting because said friend has had only positive comments about her son's name. And not in a fake grit teeth smile way.

It's ok. I don't mind. Like I said we struggle with boy's names so trying to exhaust every psoibility.

There's a Thor in DS's class. I was shocked when I heard it at first but it really suits him. He's huge with big mad hair, I like it now

I can, however imagine Britain where people are really, really good at lying and covering their feelings about a name

It's beyond awful. There are zillions of great boys names.

Kenneth Brannagh is working on Thor, the movie, due for release next year and there will be an Avengers film out soon, probably featuring Thor and the Hulk. Means the l'il one is going to grow up with a lot of popular culture baggage.

How 'bout Leif? Nice Nordic name and he can always pretend his parents were hippies in a pinch. "Yeah, my sister is called moon-flower..."

Both mum and son were born and live in another far away country so maybe people do actually think it's nice there.

Whilst I don't have anything against the name particularly, I work with a chap called Thor and he's really small and skinny so it really doesn't suit him. In fact, it kinda highlights how small and skinny he is. I think the problem with the name is it conjours up a particular kind of image. I also have a client called Mars and it's the same problem. If your DH is 6ft 7ins and built like a shed, you may be able to risk it

Mark is a popular name, but is named after Mars, the God of War, too. I think Thor is a brilliant name.

The only thing that would put me off is as Rajessta said, there is a Thor film coming out, and my concern would be that it may become a popular name.

I knew a Thor when I was about 18 - luckily for him he was cute so he got away with it (and was born in Denmark or Norway or one of the Scandy countries, even though he was a Brit). However I have to say before we met him but had heard his name we did roll around on the floor laughing about it.

I like Thor. And I'd have used it too for DS, if my DD hadn't already been named after another Norse deity (also of war among other things, which kind of suits her). But there's only so far you can go in the Midlands...

(I come from a very Norse part of Yorkshire though where the local accent involves a lot of Scandiwegian, as we tend to say.)

Miles is not a good name OTOH (better a God than a unit of measurement)

I had a huge crush on a very handsome Thor at university. He was Norwegian iirc. The name seemed to suit him.

Better than Miles imo.

In some of the Nordics the name is "Tor" rather than "Thor", and pronounced as it is spelled (As in Tortoise). It also has multicultural origins, so as well as being Nordic, it is Hebrew and Scottish.

How about Tor instead?

Tor/Thor is a perfectly acceptable, non-dramatic name for someone of Scandinavian origin; if a little 1940s perhaps. Odin otoh has definite neo-Nazi connotations.

Dh wanted Torbjörn ("bear of Thor") for ds; overruled in the end, but ds did end up with other wacky Scandinavian name instead. But then ds is the genuine article and can even speak a Scandinavian language, so his mates just have to put up with it.

I don't know: otoh the name of a war god, otoh a word meaning "warrior".

Love it, ignore the naysayers they'll all probably name their kids John and Jane, Thor is a kickass name!
