Thor

What do you think of this for a boy.

My mum's friend has a son called Thor and I thought it was quite nice.

Dp and I really struggle with boy's names.

Ds has a name that I wasn't too keen on but it does suit him. (and it was a compromise as I really didn't like Dp's suggestion of Miles)

I want to try and avoid that if Dc2 is a boy.

"I'm Thor!" he cried
His horse replied
"You forgot your thaddle, thilly"

(Thorry)

I could possibly be persuaded - it would depend on how well it suited the child. (It would be even more appropriate if he was born on Thursday which is a corruption of Thor's Day.)

A man takes home a beautiful girl and makes love to her all night. In the morning he turns to her, wanting to introduce himself and says "I'm Thor". She ignores him, throws him back down and they make love all day. In the evening, once more he says "I'm Thor". They make love all night. As dawn breaks he leans over and tells her "I'm Thor". Finally she responds - "Yeth, me too".

(Again, Thorry)

Tortington · 26/02/2010 08:15

miles and thor - no.

dude!...thor? just silly

GibbonInARibbon · 26/02/2010 08:33

'The only thing that would put me off is as Rajessta said, there is a Thor film coming out, and my concern would be that it may become a popular name'

Don't think there is any danger of that happening AbFab

Hullygully · 26/02/2010 09:09

You never know, in my dc's school we have an Ajax and a Mars already.

AllieW · 26/02/2010 09:12

And let's face it, Mark/c is from a similar root - it also means warlike. It's just that it's more culturally accepted atm.

GibbonInARibbon · 26/02/2010 09:22

Have image of small child waving a hammer, wreaking havoc at local library rhyme time.

lowrib · 26/02/2010 09:39

"What is wrong with Daniel, James, Charles or Edward?"

Nothing, but if the OP is looking at Thor and Miles, I would imagine they're a bit on the boring side for her taste!

lowrib · 26/02/2010 09:46

lifeas3plus1, what kind of name are you looking for? Lets see if we can come up with some good suggestions for you.

I've been enjoying this baby name finder recently. I particularly like that you can search on meaning, it comes up with lots of names you wouldn't have thought of.

AbFabT · 26/02/2010 11:32

Ok, GibbonInARibbon, not popular, but maybe not as uncommon as the OP would wish?

GibbonInARibbon · 26/02/2010 11:49

Really no need to bold my name

Yes I will concede there maybe more out there that think it's a great name.

stleger · 26/02/2010 11:57

I know a Thor, he is about 19 and very handsome.

ninedragons · 26/02/2010 11:59

He would turn out to be a lovely, polite, speccy little boy who was in the Chess Club at school and ended up being an actuary or a lab technician.

Miles is MUCH less ridiculous.

lifeas3plus1 · 26/02/2010 12:14

Just to clarify my Ds is NOT called Miles.

His name is a biblical name which was a compromise with Dp as I hated his suggestion of Miles.

Ok so Thor is out.

Just to give you an idea, For Ds we had a shortlist of

Luca/s
Hunter
Isaac
Isaiah

None of which I am keen on anymore although very lovely names!

Zeus is much better

(DP actually offerend this up as an option, but wasn't brave enough to use it)

dizietsma · 26/02/2010 14:25

Well, if you must listen to the MN name fuddy duddys then I vote Hunter, in honour of S. Thompson,

I like your other list. Isaiah is cool, so is Hunter.

zozzle · 27/02/2010 18:32

Not convinced at all...

minouminou · 28/02/2010 22:56

I've known a Thor or two, but it's usually pronounced Tor.
I think it's risky, and it could also carry dodgy neo-nazi connotations, but not as much as Odin.
