I've got a Euan and a Callum. This one will probs be another boy and I'm stuck. Hubby wants scottish but not too scottish so my favourite Lachlan is out. Here is what's been considered:

  • Ruiriadh - not possible as we may move to England soon and he'll get the 'rory' pronunciations which I don't like
  • Fraser - is this too posh?
  • Innes - do you think penis??
  • Ross
  • Brodie
  • Gilles - too out there??
  • Finlay - overused?

Help - any suggestions welcomed

I think Struan is lovely

DH vetoed it for our DS but there's one at our toddler group and it sounds really nice

Pingpong · 09/02/2010 23:12

Love Fraser and Innes.
Magnus may well be Scandinavian but Orkney is heavily influenced by Scandinavia and is part of Scotland so by default Magnus becomes a 'Scottish' name IMHO
and a nice one too!

RedbinDippers · 09/02/2010 23:13

Duncan
Jock
Angus

LetThereBeRock · 09/02/2010 23:16

It has become a Scottish name to an extent but I still think of it as a Scandinavian name and not a 'very' Scottish name.

Pingpong · 09/02/2010 23:16

oh yes I forgot I like Hugh too but doesn't go well with our surname so out for us.

MaggieTaSeFuar · 09/02/2010 23:19

I love Bruce. very cool.

Gregor and Fergus are gorgeous and not quite so statementy, but go for Bruce!

get my vote...we're probably going for Alasdair after my grandfather..oh and Hector (but I'm nicknamed Hector after kids's programme Hector's House, as in 'I'm just a great big silly MacHector'..

Good place to research is:

I have an Alec, and I love, love his name. It has two flaws according to the Mumsnet name police; it his 'proper' name and not a nickname for Alexander and it is the name of an old man.

I'm not sure what your husband means when he says the lovely name, Lachlan is too Scottish. It seems no more Scottish than Euan and Callum. To me the 'stereotypical' Scottish names are Tam, Rab and Jock, all names that I like. (What do I know? I live in Australia!)

Other names I like:
Alasdair
Hamish
Douglas
Adair
Murray

macmam · 10/02/2010 08:53

Seumas-(James, more correct than Hamish)
Angus
Archie
Donald
Uileam-(William)
Niall -(pronounced nee-al, not Nile, the Irish way..)
Hector
Seonaidh (Shonny - John)

Just a selection of the great Gaidhlig names that are in our family, some are kids and some older chaps...

katiepotatie · 10/02/2010 09:29

@ Smac

haggismam · 10/02/2010 10:07

AM scottish and some of the scottish names I considered:

Innes (adore this but my cousins baby is called it sob)

Fraser (my maiden name and the most likely name our son will be called, due in a week or so)

Lachlan (love it hubs didnt)

Struan (again loved it, hubs didnt)

Nealan (gaelic and likely to be the middle name for our boy)

Lexilicious · 10/02/2010 10:26

Popular boys names when I was at school in Dundee in the 80s were Ross, Neil, David, Gavin, Gregor, Cameron, Graeme, Duncan, Stuart, Andrew, Iain, Robert, Brian, Jamie/James, Alastair, Euan, Thomas, Scott. Also knew one Blair - like it.

Some fantastic suggestions above but it's possible to go TOO scottish - IYKWIM, naming him after scottishness rather than choosing a scottish name.

LOVE Magnus. very viking.

Lovethesea · 10/02/2010 11:38

There's also the hebridean favourite of Murdo (different name to Murdoch but similar meaning of sea warrior).

Duncan?

busterk · 10/02/2010 11:39

Kier

I love this name. Not sure if its scottish tho and i'm scottish living in scotland!!

Ziggurat · 10/02/2010 12:02

In my family (and we're not even Scottish ):

Robert X 2
Angus
Malcolm
Ewan (obviously out)
Iain
Ross
Grant
Hamish
Jock
Gregor

Ziggurat · 10/02/2010 12:05

Forgot a couple -

Ronald
Donal

TartanKnickers · 10/02/2010 12:11

I like Lorne.

My fave is Struan but don't think that's wise with a Euan.

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/02/2010 12:18

I like Struan as well. DS is called Campbell so I obviously love that! Our neighbour is called Drummond, and I think that is great. Lewis? I like Lachlan / Lochlin (which is the Shetland version).

sillyoldfatcatpuss · 10/02/2010 12:34

Fraser. My fave boys name (and I have one too ) Not AT ALL posh lol.

My friend has an Uncle Gillies and I never thought of Penis/Innes until you said it. If we'd had another boy he would have been Magnus (scandinavian though!)
