I've got a Euan and a Callum. This one will probs be another boy and I'm stuck. Hubby wants scottish but not too scottish so my favourite Lachlan is out. Here is what's been considered:

  • Ruiriadh - not possible as we may move to England soon and he'll get the 'rory' pronunciations which I don't like
  • Fraser - is this too posh?
  • Innes - do you think penis??
  • Ross
  • Brodie
  • Gilles - too out there??
  • Finlay - overused?

Help - any suggestions welcomed

Dugald

pippinlippin · 10/02/2010 13:00

Another vote for Innes. Also like Hamish and Archie. Finlay is nice too, but getting pretty common now.

BlueChampagne · 10/02/2010 15:27

I like Ross and Alasdair, or Alexander shortened to Sandy.

I know Aidan is really Irish, but he was an Iona monk ...

I like Lachlan too.

greedyguts · 10/02/2010 16:02

Ruiriadh - think of the poor wee soul having to learn to spell it!

Fraser - like & don't think it's posh at all

Innes - I really like this, but it was vetoed for oour 2 DSs. Not only does DH think Penis, but he also thinks Anus!

Ross - this is my favourite Scottish boys name

Brodie - not keen

Gilles - not keen

Finlay - too popular

How about Kerr?

randomimposter · 10/02/2010 16:24

lots of lovely suggestions - am on a one woman quest to raise the profile of..... Donovan....? (Know it's Irish but also a nod to the Gaelic, so could be considered Scottish?)

Goes v well with your DCs....?
Unusual but not too out there...?

BUT also LOVE Lachlan.... keep trying!

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/02/2010 17:40

Duncan.
Kester.

dizzydixies · 10/02/2010 18:49

Lorne is a sausage

Callan
Iain

skatpot · 10/02/2010 19:46

Innes is fab.

Pingpong · 10/02/2010 20:26

now I find this Kester thing quite strange. I am Scottish and lived in Scotland for 34 year and I never heard of anyone called Kester and now on MN it keeps coming up as a Scottish name.
Does anyone know of a Kester in RL and are they Scottish?
Sounds American to me.
And for the record I really dislike it!

starmucks · 10/02/2010 20:32

Stirling.

DH vetoed on the premise that we are not Scottish.

Kester is the diminutive of Christopher. So no not Scottish.

Cranreuch · 10/02/2010 20:36

Conall

Cranreuch · 10/02/2010 20:42

I like Fraser and Lachlan - I don't think of them as being posh.

Stuart?

I know a baby Kester who is Scottish.

SparklyJules · 10/02/2010 21:03

Cranreuch - Stuart is lovely, have always loved this name.

"Scottish" names I remember from school are:

Cameron
Campbell
Kris (actually, this is probably not Scottish, but I always think it "sounds" Scottish!)
Ross
Muir
Struan
Stuart/Stewart
Alasdair
Fraser (lovely name)
Iain
Brodie
Ramsey
Menzies(pronounced ming-iss)

And, thinking about these names, they never got shortened.

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/02/2010 21:25

smac/starmucks - lots of sites (here, here, here and here for example, and these are just the first 4 results on google) say that Kester is Scottish, so it's not just MNers making it up!

weegiemum · 10/02/2010 21:34

Noone else seems to have commented on it but I LOVE Brodie!

Second the suggestion of Aidan (have one!) and also like Innes, Lewis, and Ruiriadh.

What about Gaelic spellings of names - Domhnall (Donald) Uilleam (William), Pol (Paul - there's an accent on the P), Tormond (Norman), Aonghas (Angus) etc....

Its amazing how many families I knew growing up who had a Ewan and a Callum (or variety of spellings therof!!)

Pingpong · 10/02/2010 21:40

cantsleepwontsleep Yes I googled too cos I was really bored and found two sites that said Scottish and two that said English. TBH I don't believe everything I read on the internet especially if it's an American site telling me what is a Scottish name.
I am genuinely curious though as I've never, ever heard it til I started cruising the MN baby name threads.

Pingpong · 10/02/2010 21:48

and then I found this no mention of Scottishness here either.

JamInMyWellies · 10/02/2010 21:58

I have a Lachlan. I am Scots but am married to a Londoner and we live in Essex. The only thing that drives me insane is that everyone mispronounces it with a hard K sound instead of the scottish soft chh sound.

macmam · 10/02/2010 23:26

Crisdean is the Scottish Gaidhlig of Christropher. It's pronounced kree-shdan. I Love it.
Kenneth...aka Coinneach -Cun-yoch. Love it too.
Don't like Campbell, it's a Gaidhlig Surname, nor Cameron, for same reason....they are gaelic into english names. These names have meanings in another language..

florence2511 · 11/02/2010 03:37

I know a family of three boys:

Alistair, Angus and Alexander

All great names.

My favourite Scottish name has to be Hector though.

BlueChampagne · 11/02/2010 10:30

Glen?

stressedHEmum · 11/02/2010 13:59

I have an Innes!

Logan,
Lachlann
Blair
Caimbeul
Seumas
Aonghas
Camron
Fearghas
Niaill

PootleTheFlump · 11/02/2010 14:49
