Alexa, Elle or Lily?

Which do you like best?

Do you think Alexa would automatically be shortened to Alex or other names such as Al, Lex, Lexi?
I don't mind Alex as the nn for a girl, what do you think?

Would she always be correcting people if I chose Alexa? ie: people calling her Alexia, Alexis?

Any personal experience out there?

like Lili, but too many of them.

Elle is good, cannot be shortened.

Alexa is very pretty, and ok may get shortened but it is still her 'name' iyswim.

Skegness · 08/02/2010 17:11

I like Lily best.

SoLongAsItsHealthy · 08/02/2010 17:13

Agree Alexa would probably become Lexie. Which changes it from a lovely elegant name to a bit for me. Makes me think of Amanda Holden and Alex Curran - think they both have daughters called Lexie.

Lily is a very pretty name but obviously there are flipping loads of them!

I don't like Elle.

On balance then I'd go for Lily!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/02/2010 17:23

Thanks.

I am getting sick and tired of this name malarkey tbh. I can't make my mind up.

I like them all, but I prefer Elle as a nn for Elizabeth

wilkos · 08/02/2010 17:29

I have to go for Lily as I have one myself!

Not that many round here of her age (2.5)

LOADS at primary school though. Sometimes wish i had called her Elizabeth and just had Lily as a nickname however

dizzydixies · 08/02/2010 17:30

am getting a bit sick of everyone jumping on the Alex Curran/Amamda Holden bandwagon

if we're going down that route then David Bowie is the most famous person to have a Lexie and he's pretty cool

Alexa is lovely and if you don't want it shortened then don't shorten it - simple as that.

I'm afraid you're never going to be able to choose what her friends call her at school REGARDLESS of what your choose initially

and if you're going to use Lily you'd better hope she's a delicate graceful flower type - tis the reason we abandoned Grace when DD1 arrived weighing in at 10lb4oz

Lily

Lovethesea · 08/02/2010 17:59

I like Alexa but prefer Alexandra shortened to Alexa.

Elle reminds me of the magazine and model so I think fashion, but being more of a tomboy that's not a great association for me!

Lily - ok if she'll be flowery and girly but harder perhaps to live with if she turns out to prefer rough and tumble hobbies....

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/02/2010 18:35

Bowie IS indeed cool.
Couldn't give a toss about Alex Curran - who the monkeys is she anyway?
Amanda Holden is a twat though, yes. Still wouldn't put me off.

The reasons you are all adding are giving me food for thought.

It never occured to me about Lily probo not suiting too well if she turns out a tomboy - she will have 3 older brothers!

Elle, I just love the simplicity of it, plus all the boys have 4 letter long names as we chose things that couldn't be changed much, though with girls names it is much harder to find a nice one that's short so have given up.

I do not get all the fuss over Lily, but I am pretty much alone in thinking that.

Alexa is nice - I guess it would be shortened to Alex, but perhaps not as much as if she were called Alexandra.

I think Elle is a lovely name. Very elegant.

Ziggurat · 08/02/2010 19:32

Elle - much classier than Ella, too...

princessmel · 08/02/2010 19:33

Lily

dizzydixies · 08/02/2010 19:39

ooh is that a challenge?? a nice 4 lettered girls name?!

Kate
Nell
Lois
Anna
Lyra
lila
Cara

I disagree about Ella being classier than Ella - Ella sounds less like bloody Ell but thats just imo

ellokitty · 08/02/2010 20:05

Either Elle or Alexa.

UpsideDownBlueMarmoset · 08/02/2010 20:08

I know a tomboyish Lily - she's a great little girl and her name suits her perfectly well. It's just a name after all. Why do people who aren't ethereal and pretty and 'girly' not qualify for names that are seen as pretty or floral or describe positive attributes such as grace?

yama · 08/02/2010 20:26

A nice 4 lettered name - what about Lucy?

dizzydixies · 08/02/2010 20:43

Nina

momofnearly2 · 08/02/2010 20:54

Alexa.

AuntyBee · 09/02/2010 10:44

Nell

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/02/2010 20:52

.... We also like Lois and Lila.

But - our surname starts with 'S' and unless you actually conciously take a breath between Lois and the surname it sounds like her first name is 'Lowie'.
(We are terribly peed off about this as we LOVE Lois.

Is Lila naff?

Also like Lucy, yes.

you could use Louise/Louisa and have Lois as a nn?
