are you a jeweller?
Then no, please don't.

AMethyst could possibly be used and shortend to Amy, but emerald?

mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 09:34

diferent id thought emerald could be shortened to em emmie etc
reason behind it baby due around st patricks
hand had a holiday in ireland in july and pregnancy confirmed a few weeks after we returned also im irish

Emerald could be fine given your reasoning and nn Emmie is pretty, but don't put two jewel names together, it's far too much.

megonthemoon · 03/02/2010 09:36

then maybe go with a really lovely irish name instead

emerald would be a great middle name for the reasons you state, but not keen as a first name and the two together would be a bit crazy i think!

belgo · 03/02/2010 09:39

if you want a stone as a name;
Ruby
Beryl
Jade
Amber

are all better then Emerald Amethyst which is just dreadful.

differentID · 03/02/2010 09:40

How about Patricia then?

mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 09:40

wasnt going to put the two together just deciding between the two middle names would be felicity arabella or arabella felicity
unfortunately welsh dh doesnt like any irish names i do and vice versa

I have a friend called Emerald - I think it's a really pretty name. She does get called Emmy most of the time though. I prefer it to Amethyst which is a bit of a mouthful and very hard to spell!

megonthemoon · 03/02/2010 09:41

erin?

that doesn't seem quite so irish as niamh, grainne etc., but is derived from eireann so perfect

have an irish friend whose english DH happily accepted that over any more traditional irish names

SoupDragon · 03/02/2010 09:43

No.

Go with a lovely Irish or Welsh name, or which there are plenty.

Does your Welsh DH like Emerald or Amethyst??

BunnyLebowski · 03/02/2010 09:44

Emerald?

Christ almighty I'm Irish and a child called Emerald would get laughed out of school.

Please don't.

Blanchet · 03/02/2010 09:45

I'd rather be called Emerald (Em/Emmy) than Amethyst, definitely. But... I wouldn't especially like to be called either. I do think Emerald is pretty, but it might be a lot to live with.

midnightexpress · 03/02/2010 09:45

Sorry, but what have amethysts got to do with Ireland?

I'm not keen on either tbh.

mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 09:46

erin i like but no at least half a dozen other dcs have unusual names so looking for something out of the ordinary personally i love saoirse but dh loathes it we also have clodagh as a mn

OP posts:
mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 09:50

amethyst nothing to do with but once addled brain thought of emerald it rapidly moved on to other jewel names and amethyst sort of floated into that 2 oclock in the morning and i m still awake mentality but now in cold light of dawn thats less appealing but still think emerald is livable with especially as ruby and other jewel names are fashionable again

OP posts:
mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 09:53

should read nothing to do with ireland

OP posts:
WeWantYourDoofDoofs · 03/02/2010 09:59

Well surely if your DH hates Emerald that's it off the table anyway isn't it?

midnightexpress · 03/02/2010 10:01

'at least half a dozen other dcs have unusual names'

I am LOVING that you're so imprecise about the number.

mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 10:09

dh doesnt hate emerald he is willing to consider it should read know at least half a dozen erins . and our other dcs have unusual/ not very popular names . typing isnt my strong point.also regarding welsh names i cannot find any i really like and e already have one ds with a very welsh name.
