I like Emerald and think your reasoning is cogent. Esmeralda is Spanish for emerald and is more recognisably a name.

Lionstar · 03/02/2010 11:24

Glad you liked them . Pronunciation is difficult to explain in words but I would say

Eira - Ay (as in hay) ra (as in rabbit) but I have come across it pronounced Eye-ra too
Eirawen - Ay-ra-when
Eirlys - Eye-r-liss
Enfys - Env (as in envy) iss
Bronwen is much as it looks, hence translates to English pretty well

If you are looking for wintry names how about Nieve or Neve, meaning snow (and could be anglicised forms of Niamh)

Emer was the wife of Cuchulainn, a mythological Irish hero. Some of the legendabout them. She was said to possess the six gifts of womanhood: beauty, a gentle voice, sweet words, wisdom, skill at needlework and chastity.

Good joke

LadyThompson · 03/02/2010 12:01

Not keen on Amethyst but Emerald is very nice. Don't let the scoffers sway you...

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/02/2010 12:03

Well blow me down I am normally very conservative with bnames, but I like these.

I thought originally that you were going to use them together, now that would be insane beyond belief, but seperately Emerald or Amnethyst are very nice names, albeit slghtly twee/Colbys.

If you like them, I would go for them tbh.

mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 12:06

thank you lady thompson and telsa beginning to feel i was in a minority of one and was completely loosing it . i just dont see why if ruby violet etc are making comebacks emrald is so frowned upon agree with you abput amethyst

Furthermore, no one has the Victorian vapours when the name 'Ruby' is mentioned (is it the second most popular name in Britain or something?) so don't see why other gemstone names cause a kerfuffle...

Emerald
Topaz
Garnet

and so on, all nice in my view.

CantSupinate · 03/02/2010 12:30

I like Emerald as a name, I would use Emmy as NN (I know an Emmie age 10yo).

mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 12:41

lady thompson know where you are coming from thought i might get some negative comments but really surprised by how many and how vehement they are

mathanxiety · 03/02/2010 15:59

Emer is nice; it's pronounced EE-mer. So Emmy wouldn't really be a nn for Emer...

Actually, thinking about Emerald, I like it too. Also Esmerelda. I know it's a different name entirely, but it got me thinking about Esperanza too (hope).

Welsh names -- Angharad (beloved) is fab, imo, also Kerenza (Cornish 'love'))

mumofsevenplusfour · 03/02/2010 18:51

dh is beginning to like emerald as are some of the older dcs so there is hope

zozzle · 03/02/2010 19:12

I like Emerald - its different - grannyish in a cool way imo. But I'm not Irish so not sure how its viewed there.

AMethyst - ok - maybe it could be nn Ammie.

matildamum · 03/02/2010 23:11

Another vote for Emerald. I think it's pretty, unusual and I like the reasoning behind it 'Emerald Isle' etc. Emmie is a lovely nn too. Also I'm with LadyThompson - just because it's more unusual, why is Emerald being scoffed at when Ruby is currently one of the most popular girls names?... it maketh no sense to me! Ruby is a nice name but why not go for something more original?

spenthen · 04/02/2010 11:46

Now i may be wrong but didn't an ex-boy-band member (Lee Ryan??) call his son Amethyst?

Ah yes, Googled it now - Rayn Amethyst Ryan.

So there you have it. It's a boy's name.

CantSupinate · 04/02/2010 11:52

I don't like 'EEmer' as NN, it sounds quite ugly to me, I'm afraid! Almost but not quite Elmer the Elephant...

Emmer (if it were pronounced the way it's written) is the derisive NN used by Archers fans for the Emma character in the Radio Soap (as pronounced by William). So I wouldn't go for that one either, personally!!

Topaz sounds cool, though -- imvho.

stressheaderic · 04/02/2010 16:30

Isla?
Amber?

I know an Emer, I like it.
Emerald sort of growing on me the more i say it.

LOL at Rayn Ryan....

mumofsevenplusfour · 04/02/2010 17:27
