I have just found out that my sister's friend has named her new baby boy Zebedee. I was a bit but then I wondered if I was actually just a bit behind the times, and that in a few years it will be quite a popular name - what do you think?

Zebedee I doubt will ever make the top 100!

It's like Merlin, I've known a few over the years and I'm still a bit shocked when I hear it but each to their own....

It doesn't really pass the 'can they be taken seriously as a high court judge' test.

mistlethrush · 20/01/2010 17:53

Anyone remember the 'original' magic roundabout???

Marne · 20/01/2010 17:59

i like it , Zeb for short .

Jamieandhismagictorch · 20/01/2010 18:29

Terrible name. Terrible. No offence

randomimposter · 20/01/2010 19:42

Know a Zebedee who is a beautiful child. His mother doesn't wear a bra; unfortunately she also favours cropped tops.

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/01/2010 21:44

I think that Zeb is a cool nn, but would go for Zebulen for the full name myself, rather than Zebedee.

I don't mind it, but it's hugely pretentious, he's definitely going to be the guy who walks around town with a copy of Madame Bovary in his back pocket drinking chai tea.

notagrannyyet · 21/01/2010 04:48

Well it is a name from the bible. He was the father of the disciples James & John.

But to some of us he will always bounce about on his spring.

mathanxiety · 21/01/2010 05:09

Well Florence has made a tremendous comeback from the Magic Roundabout days -- why not Zebedee?

notagrannyyet · 21/01/2010 05:31

Florence is an old name making a come back. It was my grandma's name(very common in the early 1900s), and we thought about it as a middle name for our DD. I think I would associate the name more with Florence Nightingale than with the Magic Roundabout. Don't think Zebedee has ever been a popular name. It just says BOING ! for me. But maybe it won't have that association for yuonger parents.

nooka · 21/01/2010 05:39

I just think it sounds silly. Plus of course "boing, boing" and time for bed. I doubt anyone would associate it with anything else really. For example if you type it into Google you get two links to references to the biblical source, and then the Magic Roundabout (and then a techie link). Florence on the other hand has other associations, including the city and Florence Nightingale, has been relatively popular in the past, and only makes me think Magic Roundabout in combination with other names (Brian, Dougal and of course Zebedee).

Zebediah is the original biblical name I think.

boodleboot · 21/01/2010 10:36

i think Zeb is pretty cool actually but Zebedee is a bit comedy....

crumpette · 21/01/2010 11:24

I like it little DC2 hasn't been registered yet..... sorely tempted to use it as middle name...

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/01/2010 11:30

I remember a news story a couple of years ago, where in France a registrar refused to allow a couple to name their baby the French version of Zebedee (Zebulon iirc) as he deemed it ridiculous and cruel.

Need more registrars like that in this country. Baby name thread yesterday - Miele ffs.

GoldenSnitch · 21/01/2010 11:45

I know a Zebedee - He's 30. I used to work with him. Gets called Zeb for short.

His parents obviously wimped out after naming him though as his siblings are Jack and Hannah!

shoobidoo · 21/01/2010 13:03

Zebediah is nicer, in fact I really like Zebediah, nickname Zeb.

Makes a nice change from all the Zac/Zak/Zacks/Zacariahs I hear all the time.

toolly · 08/04/2010 17:06

I have one.
