Which of these girls names?

passionfruity · 17/01/2010 09:19

Our last name starts with K and is quite unusual.

I don't care that some of these names are "too popular" as I love them! Which do you prefer?

Isabelle
Annabel
Florence
Ava
Alice
Serena
Amelia

My current favourite is Serena but I'm not sure what it could be shortened too.

Serena doesn't need to be shortened to anything. It's a lovely name, so are the other names.

dizzydixies · 17/01/2010 09:27

am not a huge fan of Florence, Ava or Annabel but the others are all lovely, classic, pretty names

narna · 17/01/2010 09:36

They are all lovely, bit less keen on Annabel and Serena

VerityBrulee · 17/01/2010 09:40

I love Isabelle, despite its popularity, it is such a beautiful name. Belle is a lovely nn.

guitargirl2786 · 17/01/2010 09:55

I'm saying all the names with my friends surname which begins with K and is very rare.

Isabelle - Sounds ok with the surname and is pretty.
Annabel - Erm, not too sure tbh.
Florence - Not keen, doesn't sound great with the K name I have in mind.
Ava - This sounds the best with the K name and is also the one I like the most.
Alice - Again not keen.
Serena - Erm, It's ok I guess.
Amelia - I like this one too but is becoming very popular!

ShowOfHands · 17/01/2010 10:06

They're all fine. So popular that I just can't hear them as pretty anymore though. Just 'oh another one' now. Bit like going into a beautiful house and thinking well yes, it is lovely but wooden floors, white walls and accent art again. It might look good but where's your imagination?

And if that sounds harsh, I don't actively dislike them, they're fine names but they're the Emma of my childhood. Or in my class Big Emma, Little Emma, Emma B and Emma R.

shootfromthehip · 17/01/2010 10:17

I like Florence and Amelia but an with SoH in terms or their popularity (great analogy by the way).

However if you can live with them having several in their class with the same name then they are all 'nice'.

Mammina · 17/01/2010 12:38

Would you pronounce it Sereeena or Serehna?

Sereena might become Rena (i.e.Reena), Sez (, Sera

Serehna might become Rennles, Sere, Nana

?? or do you mean what could you call her rather than what would people shorten it to? I am rambling sorry

MrsWainwright · 17/01/2010 13:24

Isabelle - It's ok, how about Elizabeth?
Annabel - frilly Disney fairy
Florence - it's ok but trendy
Ava - trendy, Emma of this generation
Alice - lovely
Serena - ok not to my taste.
Amelia - very very popular, see Ava

Alice definitely.

passionfruity · 17/01/2010 16:22

Thanks, all. The popularity of a name doesn't put me off but anyway what names are similar to these but not as popular? (We're in central London, if the area helps).

In terms of shortening Serena (Sereeena pronunciation!) it's a mouthful to use a 3 syllabled name all the time so a nickname would be useful.

My joint second choice is Amelia and Alice, both of which I've loved for years.

Love Elizabeth (my middle name in fact) but don't like any of the inevitable nicknames.

Ava is the only one I like.

mathanxiety · 17/01/2010 17:49

Serena with Alice as mn? Even though Serena has three syllables, it flows nicely, no chopping and changing harsh consonants, so it doesn't sound that long.

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/01/2010 19:40

I like Serena and Amelia best, followed by Annabel.

SE13Mummy · 17/01/2010 20:09

My favourites from your list are Alice and Florence.

I'd say similarly classic, but not so popular names include Phoebe, Felicity, Harriet, Mary, Penelope, Isadora, Rosalind/Rosalie, Olive, Flora, Josephine, Mabel, Lucie or Dorothy/Dorothea.

I'm over in SE London and know a couple of Phoebes (one aged 13, one aged 7 months), a 4-year-old Penelope and a couple of Harriets (aged 7, 5 and 16).

Hulababy · 17/01/2010 20:14

Isabelle - ok, quite nice
Annabel - I like Anna
Florence - love this, one of my fave names
Ava - not so keen, always seems quite harsh
Alice - ok
Serena - ok
Amelia - like this quite a lot

Skegness · 17/01/2010 20:17

Really like Serena, Ava, Isabelle and Florence
Like Alice
Don't mind Annabel
Not very keen on Amelia (prefer Emily)

Hulababy · 17/01/2010 20:19

I don't think any of them are that overly used/over popular personally, or at least not round our parts.

I work in an infant school of 270 children, and DD is in a primary school of 90 girls. Plus have a quite a few friends with girls. So overall around 250 girls under the age of 11y.

In term so fhow popular round here:

Isabelle - know of 1 or 2
Annabel - know of 1
Florence - know of 1
Ava - know of an Eva (pronounced Ava, but noone spelt Ava)
Alice - know of 1
Serena - none known
Amelia - know of 2, plus an Emilia

MrsJohnDeere · 17/01/2010 20:23
