Don't give up!

A while ago I posted for views on a babyname Marilla Elizabeth...and was given generally negative opinions....I was so disappointed as after 36 weeks of trying to figure a name for baby #3 that DH and I BOTH liked, I was gutted that it was so poorly received by the good ladies of MN!

Anyway after another couple of weeks of searching through babyname sites and books we decided that there was no name we loved more and decided to call our daughter Marilla Elizabeth.

I was very nervous about letting people know her name at first but I have had nothing but very positive responses (even from my mum who has no problem in letting her opinions known usually!!)

Anyway even if people are just being nice I have decided that giving the baby the name we both loved was much better that trying to settle for a compromise...and I just wanted to pass on my experience to anyone else who is alone is loving a name for their expectant child - sometimes you are right and the rest of the world (MN world at least!) may not be!!!!

do laugh at the stolen baby name threads when others rock up and agree vociferiously. "yeah what a bitch how dare she call her son jack.make her change names"

oh grow the fuck up

The best way to solve that dilemma is to call your son Jayden/Jaidon/Jaden.

NO ONE on mumsnet would steal that name apparently

I love the name Marilla - but then I'm biased as I named my daughter Marilla!

For those AOGG fans, I didn't name my daughter after Marilla Cuthbert, but after Marilla 'Rilla' Blythe, Anne and Gilbert's daughter...

And I didn't post about it on here as I didn't want it to become too popular (looks like there's no chance of that tho!)

my friend son is jayden,he is beautiful boy. in real life id never slate a name,.but on mn if asked yes of course id be truthful

chegirlsgotheartburn · 06/02/2010 21:48

Yes my Jaidon is beautiful too.

I just dont comment on MNs. I cant really as I get so annoyed when people are rude - it would be somewhat hypocritical

Do people really change their minds according to the MN's jury?

Whilst I am not interested in other people's opinions on my DDs names per se, (we all have our own opinions and it would be a boring world if we all agreed), I did post before having both my DDs because I wanted to know two things..

  1. Are there any connotations with the name, I had missed. For example, It would be awful to name your little treasure Adolf or Myra for example, completely unaware of their infamous namesakes. I did just want to check that when a lot of people think of the name, they don't have a negative connotation. For example, there's one girls name that whenever I hear it, always makes me think 'tart'. I wouldn't want people to think that when they heard my DDs name. Now if it was a one off, someone who knew X that was a cow for example, that wouldn't bother me... but if the majority of people thought this, it would make me think twice.

2)The second thing I was interested in was to make sure the name and the nicknames all went etc. As it turns out, our original name choice was rejected because the shortened version of the name (that we were intending to use) really didn't go with our surname. I hadn't noticed it at all, but once it had been pointed out to me, I could see that it really didn't go and so we changed the name of DD2.

So yeah, opinions are too subjective to be of much value, but that's not to say the board is valueless.

hmm didnt think of that Ello. Good point about the connotations thing.

Trouble is they turn into too much of a pile in to be much help a lot of the time.

What skidoodle said. You know whether you like a name or not, this is more to get an idea of the perception of it, popularity of use etc.
