We already have an Isaac, there's German/Dutch heritage.

We love it. Particularly after reading The Book Thief.

Is it really bad though?

I love Rudy, we had it on the list but were going to use Reuben with nn Rudy - was a girl though

Lotster · 12/01/2010 22:02

Love Rudy soooooo much, would have fought for this if my girl had been a boy!

annasmami · 12/01/2010 22:13

No, it is not cool imo. I really don't like Rudolph and Rudy reminds me of 'Rude'!

hambler · 12/01/2010 22:13

My favourite boy's name ever

dizzydixies · 12/01/2010 22:13

actually in all honestly, it was right down to the wire between using DD2's name and Rudy - we went between her current name and Rudy before we settled on her name now - may I quickly point out that it got the edge only because my mother said she didn't like it

shoobidoo · 12/01/2010 22:15

Really don't like Rudolph at all.

Rudy is cute on a little boy, but I can't imagine it for an adult.

Also agree that there is potential for teasing along the rude Rudy lines...

randomimposter · 12/01/2010 23:43

Rudy is lovely and if short for Reuben goes great with Isaac...

Rudolf/ph is another matter entirely... knew one once - top tosser....

LadyOfTheFlowers · 12/01/2010 23:45

I am 26 and had a Rudi in my tutor group.

He got ribbed for his surname, not Rudi - it was Larder and he got called Rudi La Da Da or 'The Lard'.

MamaMimi · 12/01/2010 23:54

All I think about when I hear that name atm is 'Ice Age 3' as dd1 is watching the dvd over and over while she is off school ill. Tis the name of the fearsome dino!

JJ6 · 13/01/2010 00:07

Rudy is a SPECIAL name; ' A message to you Rudy'!! Love it a sound name for an adult.

seeker · 13/01/2010 05:26
  1. Find an 8 year old boy.
  2. Tien him down long enough to get a sensible answer out of him.
  3. Ask him what he would do if a new boy joined his class called Rudy.
  4. Think again.
MamaLazarou · 13/01/2010 07:09

It's such a cool name. I love it.

oliviasmama · 13/01/2010 08:10

No it's not really bad, its really really really cool. Great name.

As others will know Rudy is down to the final two names we will call bump if it turns out to be a boy (if it ever decides to come out, but that's another thread..!)

I LOVE this name, always have done. We have a friend called Rudi - male, mid-40's, tattooed... It's never been a problem for him being called Rudi as a man.

It is becoming more popular. It can be a nn for Rudolph, or Reuben, or even Rudyard! It can also be spelt Reudi (swiss/german origins I believe) if you were worried about it being a 'proper' name.

There is the rude-y, nudey type connotations but then I think you can get those with any name (Smelly Kelly etc) And I suppose with Ruby being such a popular name for girls there may be some confusion for little kids.

I would say, definitely don't use it, it's a dreadful name....only to be entirely selfish!!!

timinyday · 13/01/2010 10:07

How on earth do you get Rudy from Reuben? Silly if you ask me.

dizzydixies · 13/01/2010 10:18

timinyday - I didn't ask you. and what we were thinking of calling our baby would be our choice. I was just telling OP that's what we had thought about

lots of kids have pet names that don't sound exactly like their full names - have a bit of imagination and poetic licence please

redllamayellowllama · 13/01/2010 10:18

Wow - was expecting far more anti-Rudy responses. It would probably be short for Rudolph, although could be short for Rudyard - hadn't thought of it like that. As a pair of English teachers though, that may be one literary reference too far.

As for the whole teasing at school thing. In my teaching experience, if kids want to make fun of each other, they'll do it about anything. Some of the 'coolest' kids I've taught have had the most ridiculous names (Maverick, Buster and Tequila being only three examples). So I shall not let any fear of teasing stand in my way.

I'm not sure if I get the Reuben to Rudy translation though. Although I do quite like Reuben.

I'm pretty sure this will be a boy. But I shall ask you by stealth what you think of this one for a girl (hoping that the response to Rudy has been largely positive and you may appreciate my other choices). We LOVE Nancy.

Sorry I was addressing Orangange, who said it could be a nickname for Reuben.

dizzydixies · 13/01/2010 10:23

Nancy is lovely

and yes I can understand why Reuben wouldn't automatically flow into Rudy however all our kids have long names shortened and we didn't like Rudyard or Rudolph but loved Reuben and thought Rubes or Rudy would work just fine

personal choice and not everyone's taste but was ours at the time and I still like it

redllamayellowllama · 13/01/2010 10:26

I think I'm warming to Reuben actually. My husband claims to be a working-class hero (he's not) and it might fall onto his list of what is unacceptably middle-class (a list which defies logic, especially as he loves Rudy/Rudolph).

Glad you approve of Nancy .

OrangeAnge, in Germany/Switzerland the name Rudolph is really un-cool. My 65 year old German uncle is called this and he has never really liked his name. And Ruedi is just Rudi with a Swiss accent (which sounds terrible imo!).

shoobidoo · 13/01/2010 10:55

In any case, I'd use a proper name, like Rudolph or Rudyard on the birth certificate.

Pineapplechunks · 13/01/2010 10:59

I'm surprised at the positive response to Rudy; I hate it.

PrincessTweetz · 13/01/2010 20:39

I love Rudy...I also like Reuben but as 2 seperate names I think they are both cool sounding names. We were torn between Rudy and the name we have chosen....now I'm beginning to wish I was having twin boys so I can have Rudy aswell hehe
