What does anyone think of the name Delilah? Probably shortened to Lila. I decided I loved it after hearing the song 'hey there Delilah' when I was pregnant with DD - but by then I was already set on the name Polly for her.

Now I'm pregnant with no.2 and Delilah is the only girls name I am stuck on - only other one is Isabel, but that's just way too popular.

I love DD's name - Polly - as it's not particularly common, I've never met another Polly, but it's not contrived or weird either, and everyone knows how to spell it. Trying to find one just as nice but not too common is really hard!

Do you think she would get teased cos of the Tom Jones song, or will that all be forgotten by the next generation?!

It is a beautiful strong name. My dd is Ruby and when we named her, it was rare...my mother who is so mild-mannered told me she would call her something else if we called her Ruby...I said fine!

Now Ruby gets a big kick when people sing the Kaiser Chiefs song...she said it makes her feel famous (whether that's a good thing or not is another subject!)

Maybe she'll be a barber :-) Go for it...love unusual names. I'll never forget a friend with a very unusual name telling me that he loved it because whenever he phoned someone up he only had to say his first name and everyone knew who he was. Gives you a real sense of identity from an early age.

The main reason NOT to use it as a name for your daughter would be the fact it's Stoke cities FC theme song and is sung from the terraces every match.

I have heard of several instances of avid SCFC supporters naming their daughters this.

Don't do it.

google "delilah"+"stoke city" for the clubs website for confirmation.

I know a Deliah - also named after this song. She is 9 now and very very cool. Still, so is her mum.

I know two Pollys - love that name too.

I wouldn't the association with Tom Jones is very strong because there are very few Delilahs around and it is a very catchy song. Plus the Biblical Delilah is a fairly well known story, and personally I don't see her as an example of a strong woman. She basically seduces Samson with the intent to find out the secret of his strength at the behest and payment of the Philistines and then when he tells her it's his hair she has it cut off and he is then tortured and imprisoned. Lovely!

It is nice sounding but I don't think that is enough. Polly is very nice and I know a small Lila.

Calling a child Jezebel would just be cruel.

I wanted to call DD Delilah but didn't at the last minute because of worries about the song. So she's Lila. I still love her name (unlike DD2's which I'd like to change) - it really suits her and she gets load of compliments.

Although my one complaint about having a Lila is that it is constantly pronounced wrongly as Leela and Lilla. Drives me crazy!
