What does anyone think of the name Delilah? Probably shortened to Lila. I decided I loved it after hearing the song 'hey there Delilah' when I was pregnant with DD - but by then I was already set on the name Polly for her.

Now I'm pregnant with no.2 and Delilah is the only girls name I am stuck on - only other one is Isabel, but that's just way too popular.

I love DD's name - Polly - as it's not particularly common, I've never met another Polly, but it's not contrived or weird either, and everyone knows how to spell it. Trying to find one just as nice but not too common is really hard!

Do you think she would get teased cos of the Tom Jones song, or will that all be forgotten by the next generation?!

I think it's a gorgeous name. If it's what you want then go with it & sod what other people think.

DS has a biblical name (the actor who played Frodo, his name!) & to this day my Grandad in law refuses point blank to call him by his name (DS is now 20 months) & has referred to him as 'the little fella' but recently has started calling him Nigel because 'it sounds similar'

Quite frankly I'd like to tell him to F off but he's 80 odd & it wouldn't go down well. Sorry going off on a tangent here - with names there is always going to be someone who doesn't like it but you do & that is all that counts

NormaSknockers · 03/04/2010 08:41

dizzy - it does go nice with Poppy but the OPs DD is Polly not Poppy

dizzydixies · 03/04/2010 08:49

sorry, tired typo - I knew it was Polly because I know of one with a sister Rosie

MumtoLila · 03/04/2010 09:54

I have a Lila and I love it. We considered Delilah but decided we would never use it, and I thought it was weird to have a name you never use on the birth certificate (as someone who grew up with one, though I use that name now...so that's not really a great example).

Anyway, Lila is fab, it's very pretty, and unusual without being made up, and doesn't have the negative connotations of Delilah.

Love it and it was on our girl's list - even though we always, always ended the discussion with "e's only gone and 'ad 'is wee'abix"!

ILoveGregoryHouse · 03/04/2010 10:44

It's nice. One of the wee girls in my son's year at school is called Delilah but her mum says De-lee-la (she's American). And I like that too. She's a sweet girl.

really like it - just added it to the fridge-magnet-list-of-possible-names for the one due in June!

I really wanted Salome for a while too, but I thought it wouldn't be nice for dd to have a biblical baddie as a namesake. However, Delilah sounds pretty and that can be as good a reason as any to give her that name. Her school class are unlikely to reference Tom Jones, and even their parents might be a bit young for it.
A nice name (that I gave to my dd 2) that has positive religious meaning is Dominy (means same as Dominic and can apparently also be a boy's name). We never meet any others.

allyfe · 03/04/2010 13:50

I think it's horrible. Sorry. Think it is the fault of Tom Jones, because I'm not sure why I'd be so against it otherwise.

DebiNewberry · 03/04/2010 13:54

Lovely. I know one and never think any variant of Tom Jones/Bible stuff when I see her.

Helmar · 03/04/2010 13:54

Ok - My, My, My.

NormaSknockers · 03/04/2010 14:10

Very good point Vivian, my cousin is a Roxanne & my sister is a Lucy can't ever recall them being sung to.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 03/04/2010 14:43

Lovely, as long as you are never going to end up living in Wales. I dont think My My Delilah will ever go out of fashion there!

pranma · 03/04/2010 15:17

I had a friend named she was Portugese and the 'lila' bit was pronounced leela so it sounded like Daleela

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/04/2010 15:42

I had a dapple grey/white horse called Delilah/Deli.

She was beautiful.

I like it!

ilovepiccolina · 03/04/2010 17:50

I really like it. I also like Tallulah & Tabitha. My DD has an unusual Biblical name with 'ah' at the end.

I wouldn't use Cain or Judas, but I don't see the problem with Delilah. Your DD as a person will be associated with the name, much more than the Bible story or the song.

I would go for it. If you really love it & don't, you'll regret it.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/04/2010 18:07

I like it lots, but couldn't get over the song reference. Would use as a middle name though.

posieparker · 03/04/2010 18:08

love delilah.

not4anotherday · 03/04/2010 18:13

I have just annonced to DH we need to have another girl because I love this name

Lonnie · 03/04/2010 19:21

another one whom hears Tom Jones croone

lelarose · 03/04/2010 22:31

Love it- my cousin has a daughter called this and if not for this I'd be very tempted if I have a girl. It's strong, attractive and just the right amount of unusual..go for it!!

(no one her age will remember the song, and who cares anyway)

mumoid · 03/04/2010 22:47

I love Delilah just because of the way it sounds. Songs were written for that more than the biblical meaning surely. Lilith and Jezebel beautiful too soundwise. Where i come from 'del' means pretty and punctuates sentences in same way as love, darling, duck etc. Dinah is a step away.
