Our dillema is this.

DH, DS and I all have names beginning with J. We didn't intentionally give DS a J name, we didn't really think about it tbh.

So, I am due ds2 in 8 weeks (or sooner) and we still haven't decided if we will give him a J name or not.

There aren't really any J names that spring to mind instantly, but I haven't really looked very hard.

Or do we steer away from the J thing completely?

We are also looking for a Scottish name that isn't one of the really popular ones just now like Lewis or Cameron for example. Nothing against these names,I like them, but don't want him to be one of 6 in the class!!

But I also don't want it to be a rare name that nobody has heard of.

Our surname is two syllables, ending in an, so can't be anything like Gordon or Struan, ending in similar sound.

I'm not fussy or anything eh?

Fire some suggestions at me....

Jethro.

LoveMyGirls · 07/01/2010 15:08

James, Jay, Jacob, Joshua, Joseph, Jake, Jeremy, Jerry, Jack, Jeffery, Jesper/ Jasper

Any good?

LoveMyGirls · 07/01/2010 15:09

How did you break your leg btw?

mathanxiety · 07/01/2010 15:21

Jeremiah, Josiah, Jarlath, Jerome.

Nothing wrong with breaking the mould, or choosing a name that rhymes with -an, imo, though.

thirtysomething · 07/01/2010 15:23

Jed?

Lionstar · 07/01/2010 15:35

I would avoid another J name. It causes confusion with post if nothing else.

How about Alastair, Duncan or Campbell?

mummydarlingsausage · 07/01/2010 15:47

i would also avoid a j name - as your ds1 having a j name was unintentional and you have pointed out it does limit your choices. what about hamish, murray, douglas, mungo, angus?

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/01/2010 15:49

Sorry to hear about your ankle mawbroon.

I would avoid a J name myself, and go for Angus or Duncan.

GladioliBuckets · 07/01/2010 16:08

I quite like Jeremy, Jem for short.

mawbroon · 07/01/2010 16:56

Thanks for your replies. I have a name in my head that won't go away, and I am pleased to see that it has appeared here a couple of times.....

Fell on the snow btw re my ankle.

Any other ideas?

Ach Duncan is a fab name ... and my brother would be in complete agreement . Or was it Jeremy - don't know any of those, nice though.

Sorry to hear about your ankle. Good excuse to hole up on the sofa, which is pretty much all you want to do in the later stages anyway. Good luck!

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/01/2010 17:06

Oh do tell us which one is in your head Mawbroon.

sweetkitty · 07/01/2010 17:17

I love Hamish

Angus and Duncan also nice

I also know a

Blair
Carrick
Nairn
Murray
Fraser
Stewart

mathanxiety · 07/01/2010 17:21

Keir
Callum
Euan
Arran

GladioliBuckets · 07/01/2010 18:22

Oh yes, Duncan's very manly imo.

mawbroon · 07/01/2010 20:18

It's Angus that I like. Duncan is a fab name too, but BIL has that name, so too immediate. We also have Alastair, Iain, Fraser and Gordon in the family, so don't want to comfuse things too much but would have been happy with any of those names...

Hello Mawbroon, I knew this would be you!
Just to add my voice, I think Angus would go really well with your surname.

avaj · 07/01/2010 20:29

Fergus
Murray
Blair
Oran
Jamie
Murdoch/Murdo
Clyde (as long as you don't live in Glasgow!)

CaptainNancy · 07/01/2010 20:42

Sorry to hear about your ankle mawbroon...

What about Jago (cornish name)?
For Scottish... sorry to hear Gordon or Duncan ruled out...
What about Magnus or Innes?
My favourite is actually Kester...
Ramsay and Fraser are nice too.

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/01/2010 20:43

Is Kester a Scottish name CN? I suggested it to dh and he thought that I'd made it up.

pointydig · 07/01/2010 20:50

No, move away from J names.

avaj · 07/01/2010 20:58

Oh, just thought of some more...
What about;
Laird
Muir
Lorne
Atholl
Lauchlan (not sure how you spell)

yama · 07/01/2010 21:01

Bruce? Cracking name.

pointydig · 07/01/2010 21:02

I do like the sound of Lorne but I suppose non-scots might think it a bit feminine

Lionstar · 07/01/2010 21:26

Came across a baby Kester the other day, sounded cute, they weren't Scots. Also really like Keir too.
