Our dillema is this.

DH, DS and I all have names beginning with J. We didn't intentionally give DS a J name, we didn't really think about it tbh.

So, I am due ds2 in 8 weeks (or sooner) and we still haven't decided if we will give him a J name or not.

There aren't really any J names that spring to mind instantly, but I haven't really looked very hard.

Or do we steer away from the J thing completely?

We are also looking for a Scottish name that isn't one of the really popular ones just now like Lewis or Cameron for example. Nothing against these names,I like them, but don't want him to be one of 6 in the class!!

But I also don't want it to be a rare name that nobody has heard of.

Our surname is two syllables, ending in an, so can't be anything like Gordon or Struan, ending in similar sound.

I'm not fussy or anything eh?

Fire some suggestions at me....

What about Campbell and the like? Folk seem to like those names although i am not keen on it myself. DH is Alastair which i love!!! Very strong and manly IMO which really suits DH.

mawbroon · 08/01/2010 11:05

Hi agalch. Sorry, have this on FB as well!!

Ok, here are the ones I like. Trouble is, when I mention names to DH, he kind of glazes over and just says no to everything [helpful] saying that, it was him that came up with ds's name.

My faves so far are Angus, Innes, Alastair (but have a cousin with that name) and Duncan (but have BIL).

I will just have to keep on at DH in a non-nagging manner until we decide. i guess if he can't come up with any then we'll have to go with one of mine.

I think you should stay away from the J's.
I am also laughing a lot at some of the early suggestions - can people not read ???? Since when was Jethro, Jeremy, Jacob, Jerimiah, Joshua Scottish ????

From your latest list my order of preference is
Innes
Alastair
Angus
Duncan

I also really like Fraser and Ewan.

FimBOW · 08/01/2010 12:14

I really love Angus but hate Gus. I had considered it for ds but decided against it because of the Gus thing. I guess partly as well because my own name has a t in the middle of it which everyone drops i.e. too lazy to say it properly and it sounds dreadful.

SmacOnTheLipsUnderTheMistletoe · 08/01/2010 12:16

oh and I really like Hugh too!

dizzydixies · 08/01/2010 13:09

the only Innes I ever knew was wonderful [smile

Alistair am not overly keen on for some reason

have we had Hamish?!?

Hugh is ok but I prefer Hugo - not sure of its Scottishness though

Iain of course is another one

I know 2 Frasers and they are both lovely too

will have another think of the kids in DD1's school and DD2's playgroup

loving the The Bairn and Hen suggestion though

mawbroon · 08/01/2010 13:13

LOL at the bairn and Hen.

That would mean that I also need to consider Joe and Horace too.

Iain and Fraser are great, but there are too many of them in the family already!!

I shall keep thinking then but at the minute cannot see past Innes and will be distraught if you don't use that or Hector - no pressure though

Murray? has anyone said Murray?

dizzydixies · 08/01/2010 13:21

Ramsay?

is it even scottish? we had a nice one at primary

Bella32 · 08/01/2010 13:23

Alasdair

FimBOW · 08/01/2010 13:24

I think Ramsay is Scottish, I know at least two.

There is always Oor Wullie too. Couldn't remember the rest of the Broon boys names, so thanks for the reminder!

FimBOW · 08/01/2010 13:25

I know a Johnston too, which is fab, sadly not for you though!

dizzydixies · 08/01/2010 13:29

oh god no not Johnston - have you ever been to Johnstone?!?! its horrible

no offence to any resident of the lovely town, it took me long enough to get away from living near to there

dizzydixies · 08/01/2010 13:30

Forbes?

mawbroon · 08/01/2010 13:30

Oh dizzy, there's a Murray in DHs family and two Williams (they're not called Wullie though) on our side.

why have my family already used all the braw names?

OP posts:
FimBOW · 08/01/2010 13:32

But that is John stone surely, this is John stun and no I have never been there.

I went to school with a Forbes.

dizzydixies · 08/01/2010 13:32

MaggieMnaSneachta · 08/01/2010 13:38

yama, i love Bruce too!

I'd steer clear of two Master Js in the one household. If you go for a j name I like Jago or Jem.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 08/01/2010 13:41

I like Kester, and normally I don't like names I haven't heard before.

dizzydixies · 08/01/2010 13:42

dizzydixies · 08/01/2010 14:14

does Alisdair not remind anyone else of the Billy Connolly sketch about the posh Scots blokes saying their names and then spelling it alasD>A>I>R ?!?!

just me

mawbroon · 08/01/2010 17:08

Nope, sorry, don't know that one dizzy. Was it from a long time ago when billy Connolly was actually funny??

OP posts:
pointydig · 08/01/2010 18:16

don't remember the connolly routine but alasdair is a little too wet for me.
