I'd be interested to hear your predictions for popular baby names of 2010.

I thik it can be so hard to tell sometimes, my nephew is a Theo but when he was born 7 years ago it wasn't popular at all & I'd never even heard a baby called it before, now they're popping up all over the place!

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 08:42

bugger it, i don't know what to call little Edgar 3# and every name i've thought of has been mentioned (having already been rejected by Dh as wacky names no-one would give their child...).

sheepgomeep · 12/01/2010 09:23

we have jacob for dc4 NOT because of twilight but because I like the name.

NO idea what to call it if the baby is a girl.. thinking of Seren but still not sure arghhhh

Builde · 12/01/2010 09:30

How about Laura.

I love the name but won't ever get the chance to use it. (Family complete).

Martha got popular around us this year, but seems to have died a quick death.

Fave girls names:

Laura
Lauren
Anna
Eleanor
Lucy
Elizabeth
Rachel
Sarah

Fave boys names:

Peter
William
Thomas (but far too common)
Michael
James (but again, too common)
Max!

sheepgomeep · 12/01/2010 09:31

i grew up with an unusual name for my generation too and was the only one in the school with my name. I did get bullied as well because of my name and its affected me to this day

I am now known by my shortened name thank god.

I would never inflict an unusual name on my kids, it can make thier lives hell

noddyholder · 12/01/2010 09:36

Old lady names are so over here in brighton and a you hear a fair few edies and dulcies screamed in asda now!The 70s and 80s is are due a revival.

Alison is on the up

passionberry · 12/01/2010 10:42

I am quite pleased that my name for DD1 (due in April) hasn't been mentioned on this thread BUT . . . I don't think it really matters if the name you like best happens to be one of the "big" names for this year. I know three little Avas and I still think it's pretty. It would seem strange to name your child Janice or Barbara just because you want them to be the only one . . .

It's like clothes - everyone likes skinny jeans at the same time etc.

I have spent 30 years explaining my name to people and having an unusual name is over-rated IMO!

greygirl · 12/01/2010 11:22

i think people pick names that WEREN'T popular when they were children/at school. so in my class there were 3 lisas, 4 helens, 2 davids, about 5 philips and 6 claires. and i only know of 1 baby called claire now. so in 10 years time people will say 'not chloe/sophie/jack or harry'.....

lottiejenkins · 12/01/2010 13:33

I was out somewhere the other day and heard a woman say her daughters name was "Cinnamon"

lottiejenkins · 12/01/2010 13:36

My son is a Wilfred, i worried that there might be loads of Wilfreds after Ivanhoe was shown on tv just after he was born but thankfully it didnt happen!!

mumoftoomany · 12/01/2010 13:48

I predict more of

Florence
Margaret

Quentin
Victor

AlexandraPeppernose · 12/01/2010 14:00

There are millions of Lexi's and Oscar's around here.

KitchenKate · 12/01/2010 14:00

Francesca seems to be the popular choice in my friends and family. I now know three.

MamaLazarou · 12/01/2010 14:07

We considered Cinnamon for a girl (DH is a big fan of the Mission Impossible TV series)!

I'm thinking for girls it'll be jewel names - Ruby, Pearl etc

Boys- some relatively untapped old man names like Charles, William, Edward

tummytickler · 12/01/2010 15:23

Oh no, not Pearl - my 4 year old is called Pearl - I would hate for it to become as popular as Ruby! My other dd's name has been mentioned too!
Avada - I dont know where you live, but down here there are so many Charles, William and |Edwards - I certainly would not call them untapped!
My Pearl has 2 Florences in her class at school, we know a couple more at nursery/toddler group, think it will get much bigger!

CheerfulYank · 12/01/2010 16:02

I try to choose "timeless" names. I called DS Sam b/c you wouldn't know, upon hearing it, whether he was 8 or 108 IYSWIM. I'm stuck on Eleanora, nn probably Elle, for a DD if we have one, and Will for another DS. I say I'm going to go with Elle anyway! I've always wanted Eleanora, but over the years the nn has been Ella and then Ellie and now finally Elle. We'll see...

I think it depends, though. I'm a Megan born in 1982, and I know tons of women w/my name who are a few years older/younger than me. I still like it! Name your kiddos whatever you want.

jackandbethsmum · 12/01/2010 17:00

My friend called her baby Wilhelmina and her cousin is called Clementine.

My DS is Jack and there are only 3 in his school of 300. Maybe I wouldn't have chosen it if I had realised it was so popular, but I still love it.
My DD is Beth - don't know any of those.

TiggyR · 12/01/2010 17:25

Never heard Wilhemina used before - it's absolutely lovely! I really loved Clementine for a girl, with all three of mine (the youngest is ten) but couldn't use it because with my last name beginning Cl...it's a tongue twister!

MaggieMnaSneachta · 12/01/2010 18:56

Yomojo, I don't think the Irish are more inclined to nick name. In fact, I found londoners the most inclined to just call me *Mags.

Over here though, a Sean might be called John on occassion, or a LIam William. THere are a few names which slip from Irish to English. Not all, but there are names which lend themselves to this translation.

mathanxiety · 12/01/2010 20:53

Alice, Margaret, Pearl, Ruth, Esther, Aoife, Orla, Anne-Marie, Sylvie, Frances
