I'd be interested to hear your predictions for popular baby names of 2010.

no - not Iris, i have an 8 year old called Iris, I dont want there to be millions!
I think Nancy will be big, also the Bert names (Albert, Gilbert)

smother · 07/01/2010 21:29

a couple more likely to become more popular:

eleanor, felicity

milo

mopsyflopsy · 07/01/2010 22:00

Arthur
Quentin
Albert
and other 'old man's names.

LuciaRose · 08/01/2010 11:29

I think there will be a move back to plainer, simpler names, as people try to be different from the flowery old lady names.

Names like Sarah, Mary, Jane and Anne, possibly even Susan, will start to seem really classic and elegant alongside the slew of Florences, Elsies, Hatties and Isabellas. Much as I love those flowery, old-fashioned names, I think people are concerned with calling their children something that no-one else is called, the trend is bound to change.

stressheaderic · 08/01/2010 14:03

Lucas and Freya seem to be the de rigeur choices round here...one born every minute.
Also lots of Isaacs and Isabellas.

I loved Naomi but we are both N so thought it was a bit strange.

I hope Ethan doesn't go nuclear, we have it for dc due next month. Or Bethany for a girl.

LuciaRose · 08/01/2010 15:37

I've thought of a few old lady names that haven't yet been tapped into - what about Peggy and Marjorie? I personally quite like these - very much along the same lines as Nancy in my opinion.

hellokitty123 · 08/01/2010 15:55

Based on recent friends' births, there are still lots of Alfies, Archies, Ellies, Ellas being born. Also some more Quentins and Arthurs.

MaryMungo · 08/01/2010 16:07

We have an Eddie.

Swore up and down he'd stay Edmund, now it"s Eddie, Eddie Baby, Eddiebear, etc

tummytickler · 08/01/2010 17:39

Lucia - I love both Peggy and Marjorie - but dh wont use Margaret and I wont use Peggy as a full name!

StarExpat · 10/01/2010 11:32

stress - I know someone who just had an Ethan. My ds' name seems to be quite safe from becoming popular.

blijemuts · 10/01/2010 11:50

How about Sebastian? Think it's one of those you love or hate. Fleur for a girl? All depends on sirname too.

YoMoJo · 10/01/2010 11:58

we named 6 month old ds Henry as we wanted a traditional name that wasnt overly popular or too dated. However - I now know 3 other Henry's born since!

Lucas & Rueben also seem quite popular as someone earlier on mentioned.

Amelia, Amelie, Ruby still seem quite "in" for girls.

duchesse · 10/01/2010 12:05

I predict an explosion of Matildas.

Alicetheinvisible · 10/01/2010 12:08

Really love Ivy, Olive and Violet for girls but my DD is Daisy. As much as it seems to be getting very popular i don't know any other Daisys.

I love Maggie too, but DH won't have it.

I think Florence will be very popular this year (mostly due to Florence and the machine i think)

My little sister (aged 1yr) has Jean as her middle name, i also think Betty will come back very soon. Really like Judith/Judy/Jude.

I don't really know about boys names.

Heated · 10/01/2010 12:24

Agree with LuciaRose about a return to plainer girls' names amongst those favouring old lady chic (Jane, Catherine, Sarah, Mary, Louisa) and also a trend for more European versions of names (like Luca/Tomas) which has been popular for the last couple of years.

Crumpets · 10/01/2010 13:08

Nearly all the baby boys I know are called Henry or Harry. (well, almost).

ceb80 · 10/01/2010 13:11

We have a Xander - hope it doesn't become too common popular

blametheparents · 10/01/2010 13:15

Florence

boodleboot · 10/01/2010 13:18

i reckon there will be lots of edwards and isabellas....maybe rosalie and jacobs too.....twilight effect....

BellaBear · 10/01/2010 13:20

my prediction: the names from twilight will all rise up through the ranks: emmett, jasper, rosalie, edward, alice, esme, jacob. Possibly not carlisle, and bella's already up there

pointydig · 10/01/2010 13:20

Angel

alexpolismum · 10/01/2010 13:32

Phew! No one has yet mentioned my ds's name! (aged 2 weeks) or even my other children's names.

I agree about the Biblical names, with perhaps some classic names making a comeback.

winomum · 10/01/2010 13:44

I've heard of tons of Lexi's & Mathilda/Tilly's, also flower names (favourite recently being Blossom). Eva/Ava/Aoife is unbelievably popular (2 in our tiny road)and we know three people who have called their baby girl Stevie.
Boys names Archie/Alfie/Charlie/Teddy.
I'd hazard David/Matt for this year from the doctor who effect.

hocuspontas · 10/01/2010 13:48

The top 100 go by birth registration do they?

I noticed Lexi and Lexie and Lily and Lilly. Some names will be more common than appear on here.

E.g. Eleanor and Isobel are names that have a lot of variant spelling but sound the same (ish)
