I'd be interested to hear your predictions for popular baby names of 2010.

Of 7 pages not one post has mentioned either of the names we have chosen for our twin boys (arriving tomorrow by c-section) so feeling very happy about that. It took a long time to choose them and having talked to the bump for months by name I wouldn't want to change them now.

My first name is one of the most commonasmuck/popular names of my generation - there was even a Spice Girl with my name - but when my parents chose it they didn't know a soul with it so I guess you can't predict what will become fashionable.

Maybe I'll be unlucky and E and H (no I wont be more specific) will become popular. Fingers crossed they won't as I have hated my name at times.

zozzle · 11/01/2010 17:06

I think a 60s/70s revival is due - stuff all the granny names.

I think Donna / Michelle & Kimberley (sp?)

Actually I do like Kim

CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 17:14

I think Serenity Brick will make a huge jump

I've heard that (at least over here) names you'd expect to hear on a "plucky girl detective" from the 50's will be big. Susie, Nancy, Debbie, etc.

Wigeon · 11/01/2010 17:50

We have an Eva and thought it was nice but unusual in 2008. We are obviously unable to be original and so I shall choose a name from this thread for any small brother or sister she may have and shortcut the pretence of originality!

Avatar (for a girl)

MaryMungo · 11/01/2010 18:44

I have a Johanna (h is silent )

My youngest was going to be Peter or Andrew, but looked like neither at birth, so delegated naming to DH who took thirty seconds to come up with Edmund Ian.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 11/01/2010 18:45

no, don't know a single one, but I think it has the vibe of Esme. But newer, fresher. it sounds like Esme did ten years ago.

ditto bruce. laugh folks, but bruce is just around the corner, coming to a creche near you soon.

I feeeeeel the rise and fall of names in my bones. not to blow my own trumpet (as it's hardly a marketable skill anyway) but I'm usually ready for names before ms average.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 11/01/2010 18:50

victor is the new hector

marcus is the new lucas

Sylvie is the new Sophie

I think these three names will rise as people look for something familiar a bit different.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 11/01/2010 18:52

ps, I wouldn't be surprised to come across a Belinda either. I think Isabel and Matilda have paved the way for Belinda. I think people with mothers called LInda might not yet be ready to call their babies Linda, but Belinda sounds quirkier, cooler. Plucky detective as cheerful yank calls it! yes, I love plucky detective chic!! also, along with Belinda, definitely Nancy, Lois and Margot. All plucky detectives. Also known as Bridge chic.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 11/01/2010 18:58

ps I have another one which is going to rise...

Posy & Ivy is the new Lily and Rose.

I also think maybe Donald ... could be the younger brother to a Magnus.

MrsMattie · 11/01/2010 19:05

I think the old man/lady names are sticking around for a while. The really crusty, dusty old ones haven't come out yet (Harold, Percival, Hilda, Maude) etc, but they will...just a matter of time! Then I predict a big return to 'plain' 1960s and 70s-ish names like John, Paul, David for boys and Sarah, Emma, Rachel for girls.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 11/01/2010 19:58

Not ALL names come back though. It's never guaranteed!

I personally don't think David/Linda/Stephen/Claire will come back in a big way until 2040. David might be the new jack in 2040

Emma, Sarah and Rachel are all in the top 30 names in Ireland, they are hugely popular now. I imagine it's similar in the uk. I think it is, with the exception of Rachel. Oddly, Rachel is a classic name that is significantly more popular in Ireland than it is in the UK. I don't know why that is. But it interests me. Obviously I should get out more, and yes I'm a geek. Rachel shares the Hannah slot here if you know what I mean. Some of the hannahs are rachels if that makes sense!

incandescent · 11/01/2010 20:34

My predictions:

Nina
Martha
Rosamund
Isla
Constance

Magnus
Cassius
Vincent

hersuit · 11/01/2010 20:42

Sorry can@t read, thought they were 2 different names!

hogshead · 11/01/2010 20:43

Its funny how things come round and about again . . . . my grandmother was horrifed when my parents called me Hannah as she thought it was an old lady's name and associated it with spinsters! (this was a little while ago - i won't mention how old i am this year as i am in serious denial)
I was quite upset when someone told me that there was a character in Eastenders (never watch it these days as i can't keep up with the plot lines anymore) with DS name (Noah) but I liked the name, it was the only one DH and I agreed on and he's kinda grown into the name now so i can't imagine changing it.

hersuit · 11/01/2010 20:43

Or type, it seems: can't read

Boobz · 11/01/2010 21:10

This is a nightmare - am due in 5 months and all of my potential names have come up here (although I think MaggieMnaSneachta is saying a lot of names so you're not being fair really... shh now and stop putting ideas in people's heads!)

Seriously though, I don't think anyone has mentioned my DD's name (and she's 9 months now) and it's quite a traditional name... and I do have a name for the babe if it's a boy which hasn't been mentioned yet (but damned if I'm telling you lot what it is! :P)

NormaSknockers · 11/01/2010 21:43

I think Seth will increase in popularity probably Isaac & Dexter too.

I'm not sure about girls names, maybe Violet, Martha...

NormaSknockers · 11/01/2010 21:45

I'm a Kymberly & spent most of school years being reminded of Victoria Woods Kimberly, my drama teacher always used to say my name in the same way!

curiositykilledhaskittens · 11/01/2010 22:44

Ha ha ha! Just read MaryMungo as 'my youngest was going to be Peter Andre' ROFL

You're all mad... chose names you like... weird competitiveness over being unusual/ly spelled....

curiositykilledhaskittens · 11/01/2010 22:45

or even choose

MattSmithIsNotMyLoveSlave · 11/01/2010 23:04

I've met a couple of baby Wilfreds, too -- I think that's a little ahead of the curve so I'll put in a prediction for Wilf/Wilfred to be huge in about five years' time (although you never know, the Bernard Cribbins Effect may bring it in sooner).
