I'd be interested to hear your predictions for popular baby names of 2010.

We have a Christopher (absolutely not a Chris, but a Christopher). He is the only one I know born in recent years and yet it's a really traditional name.

I'm pretty conservative where names are concerned, but I find it ironic that so many people are trying to be "different" that some of the most obvious traditional names are completely dismissed .

MummyElk · 11/01/2010 03:13

anyone seen this??
makes me feel a bit better - our great-grandparents weren't so hot on finding new names either!!
am completely stuck with boys names at the moment. our surname doesn't help (tends to make most syllabic names into adjectives)

bebejones · 11/01/2010 08:26

Like alot of people I'm feeling quite relieved that a girls name I really love is not featuring on here (not PG but have it in mind!). DD's name was top 100 but I didn't know until after she was named it. I have not met another one & everyone we speak to says how unusual & pretty it is

ninedragons · 11/01/2010 08:38

I have seen Astrid and Celia popping up on a few shortlists lately.

hattee · 11/01/2010 09:26

newmum265 - there's no reason why you can't call your son by his second name if you want to. You can even swap them around on his birth certificate if you feel strongly about it

JulianeLSN · 11/01/2010 10:10

We have got 3 Jemimas in our circle of friends who were all born in the last year.

GeorginaWorsley · 11/01/2010 10:41

I have a Jemima,born 10 yrs ago.
deliberately called her that as was classic but unusual.
Hope it doesn't gain in popularity.

Adair · 11/01/2010 10:51

I predict a massive rise in the name Sky/Skyler for a boy

othersideofchannel · 11/01/2010 10:57

I know 2 little girls called Skye. I quite like it.

MamaLazarou · 11/01/2010 11:09

Skyler's nice, though I prefer the spelling Schuyler.

I think we'll see a return to classic names:

William, Richard and Peter for boys..

Sarah, Ruth, Emma for girls...

Adair · 11/01/2010 11:24

(I know, me too Mamalazarou, but we thought it would be too tricky. Skyler seems fairly accepted in US. I still wobble though...)

'Sarah, Ruth, Emma for girls' - flashback to 80s where I was known as 'little Sarah/Ruth/Emma*' as there was always one bigger than me!

*not telling which

hannahsaunt · 11/01/2010 11:25

Ds1 & 2s names always appear in the top ten in England & Wales but never ever in Scotland where we live so they are quite distinct e.g. at school. Ds3 was one of something like 50 born in Scotland in 2007 so we'll have to wait and see - the short version of his name is terribly common popular though and we are very clear that he is the looooong one. Glad to see neither name for dc4 (due in the next month) has appeared. Yet.

BigusBumus · 11/01/2010 11:27

A friend of mine has just called her little new born girl Joanna. Which struck me as odd at first, but actually I really like it.

laurakeegan · 11/01/2010 11:32

We have a girl due in April and will be calling her Amelie, hope its not too popular

I predict short-term climbers: Isla, Layla, Esme, Lacey, Matilda

I think Cecilia and Cecily will definitely be coming through in a few years, though.

hersuit · 11/01/2010 12:45

I grew up with an unusual name and longed to be called Sarah or Catherine, something I didn't have to spell every bloody time!
Just saying cos I'm always a bit gutted when our names appear on these list but then I think it's easier for DCs if they do.

hersuit · 11/01/2010 12:47

Oops, forgot to answer question in my 'think of the children' rant..
Iris of course because I've loved it for years. Mathilda/ Maggie/ Agnes too.
And MamaLazarou, you're kidding, right?

floppers · 11/01/2010 12:55

Atticus and Oakley - I know two Oakley toddlers.

crankytwanky · 11/01/2010 13:46

Eden (M or F)
Lexi
Maia
Saul

MamaLazarou · 11/01/2010 14:09

I'm kidding about what - Schuyler? No... why?

YoMoJo · 11/01/2010 14:10

Newmum -
Did I read correctly that you were Irish??? The Irish are the worst for nicknames - my family are all known by completely different names to what is on their birth certs! My Grandfather was known as Tom but was really called Seamas!!!

all my Dad's sisters are known by their middle names! I think one grandparent registered them but the other grandparent wasnt happy with the choices so changed them!

newmum - we are happy with our choice, none of our originals would have been right at all although we really liked them at the time.

I am pregnant again now though and DH is talking about giving DC2 a more 'traditional' name - although DS1's isn't exactly wacky (Zachary) - infact I'm worried it's going to get a bit too popular!

Problem is, maybe everyone will go the more traditional route to be different from all the 'wacky' names that are actually now pretty mainstream and then we will end up with something too popular anyway........
