It's my Nan's name, DD1 is named after DH's maternal grandmother, thought it could be nice to carry it on should next baby be a girl.

Didn't consider the Elephant connection til I typed it out! Drats.

ornella?

pipWereRabbit · 21/10/2009 23:08

Would you consider names along the lines of Helen, Ellen, Eleanor and then use Nellie as an nickname?

mazzystartled · 21/10/2009 23:10

Helena
Nell
Fenella

Astrid28 · 21/10/2009 23:18

Ornella - I'm not sure I could do that.

Well my Mum is called Helen, but I was kind of looking for a modernised version.

Nell is the one I like most so far.

I could go with my other grans name which is Norah...is that too grannyish?

Norah def grannyish... DDs nonagenarian has that as a first name (but always hated it and so is called by her second name.)

Helen is classical - does it need updating?

Astrid28 · 21/10/2009 23:30

Hmmmm maybe not. It's just always been a middle aged name to me. It'd be like calling her Janet or Eileen.

I should prob add that not 100% sure I'm even pg yet!! Just been pondering.

I think Elin is a scandanavian version of Helen. I had a friend called this and think it's really pretty.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 21/10/2009 23:35

oooooooooooooooh. i think nora might be due a wee comeback, i think it's a beautiful name, very elegant. i know a cora.

islandofsodor · 21/10/2009 23:37

My Grandmother was called Nellie or Nell but her real name was Ellen. Dd is named after her.

I like Ellen, that's nice and would go quite well with DD1's name actually......

As a child, Nellie & Nora were the epitome of old lady names because of my grans, but I was thinking Nellie Furtado, Norah Jones.....could I get away with it outside of showbiz?? !

OP posts:
islandofsodor · 22/10/2009 10:00

Dd's nickname is still Ellie the Nelliephant though.

TheBlairSnitchProject · 22/10/2009 10:10

DH's Nan was called Nellie, his Granny is Ellen but gets called Nellie!!

Ellen would be a pretty and modern version.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 22/10/2009 10:10

cornelia is lovely shortened to nelia and neelie, imo.

BarbaraBlacksheep · 22/10/2009 10:21

How about Elena?
And I think Norah is gorgeous by the way!

mathanxiety · 22/10/2009 18:49

I love Nora or Norah too, and I know 3 of them under 15. How about Honour or Hanora? Love Elin, Helena and Cornelia mentioned here too.

cookielove · 22/10/2009 18:54

My sister is Neva pronounced Neeevah if that makes sense, and she is nicked named nelly by our dad, its a different option for you

EvilTwins · 22/10/2009 19:06

Nell makes me think of that film with Jodie Foster.

Like Ellen or Elinor/Eleanor.

Norah is lovely too - not grannyish at all IMO.
