Roman

We're expecting DC2 and I have my heart set on calling it Roman if it's a boy. Problem is, dh doesn't like it and neither does my mum. I thought dh would be happy with the choice as it's used in Russia (dh is Russian) but alas no.
When we had ds1 the only boys name we both agreed on and liked was Maxim, calling him Max. We could not think of one other boy's name that we both liked. He'd reel off lots of Russian boys names, all of which I disliked and he didn't like any of the English boys names I gave.
We're going to be in such a dilemma if dc2 is a boy!
When I told mum the other day I'd like to call it Roman she nearly fell out her chair in shock and said it's a delboy name. also, she said that people would think of roman polanski. I said that's as ridiculous as people thinking harold - shipman; pete - sutcliffe; ian - huntley.
What do you think of Roman?
Please could you suggest to me Russian boys names - perhaps there's one dh didn't list that i'd like too.

Sacha short for Alexander?
You can't really call your baby Roman if your dh hates it, can you?

jasper · 08/10/2009 00:37

are you Russian?

Tortington · 08/10/2009 00:39

dd went to school with a 'Roman'

he was a nice boy

brockleybelle · 08/10/2009 00:43

I'm English.
I don't like Alexander/Sacha.
Am thinking that if I call it Roman enough (if we find out it's a boy that is) he'll come round!!!

Why are you looking for a Russian name?

You really can't insist on a name your dh does not like!
How would you feel if he tried that with you?

jasper · 08/10/2009 00:59

lots here

diddl · 08/10/2009 08:42

I love it.

I know one & he´s gorgeous!

skihorse · 08/10/2009 08:46

I know one Roman personally - a vile, Russian bully who reduced me to tears under my desk at work!

... and Roman Polanski - child rapist.

Brockley Does your hubby have any other Russian name suggestions? There must be more than just those 3! I work with a Michael and a Lev (almost pronounced Love) who are Russian.

MmeGoblindt · 08/10/2009 08:50

If you cannot decide on a English or Russian name, why don't you go for something neutral. Or a name that is similar in both languages. Going by the site that Jasper linked

Peter
Gregory
Josef
Robert
Edward / Eduard - like this
Julian
Anton
Constantine

There are some lovely names there, that would go with your DS1s name too.

Roman is ok, but at the moment it is very connected with Roman Polanski. If you had asked at any other time then it would not have occurred to me, but it is very much in my head at the moment.

Apart from anything else, if your DH does not like it, then you will just have to think of something else.

Rindercella · 08/10/2009 08:55

If your DH hates the name, I really don't think you could call your son Romam. After all, he will be your DH's son too.

Try thinking outside of purely English or Russian names and just choose one you both like, regardless of origin.

Try not to fall out about it - you could be having a girl, so may not be an issue

brockleybelle · 08/10/2009 11:19

Oh don't worry, people! I wouldn't dream of going ahead with Roman if DH didn't want it. Didn't mean to suggest that. I'm just hoping that he'll be persuaded!
We bought a baby name book with last baby which listed 100s and we didn't find any we mutually liked. Will keep hunting.
Thanks for the link, Jasper. I found that site last night. I like Leo, so I'll see what dh thinks.
This morning I asked my brother what he thinks of Roman and he said the first thing he thought of was Roman Polanski!! Arrgghhh.

People in the UK will know of plenty of Harolds, Petes and Ians, but possibly only one Roman...

brockleybelle · 09/10/2009 18:27

Pyrocanthus, my brother's argument was along the same lines

we called ds2 roman - i loved it and then wasn't sure for ages but dh was deadset on it and we couldn't agree on anything else

not many people in real life liked it - or on mumsnet - but i'm so glad we went with it in the end. ds2 is nearly 3 mths old now and i couldn't picture him being called anything else. and lots of the people who hated it now love it as his name

i think it's a good strong name and will suit him even more when he's a man

i wouldn't worry too much about name associations - he will own whatever name you give him and make it his own. I know peple called Moses and Columbus etc and when I hear their names I think of them and not their namesakes

QueensShilling · 09/10/2009 18:52

Wouldn't be on my list

Jodyray · 09/10/2009 19:40

I love Roman its lovely!

Prunerz · 09/10/2009 19:46

Oh come on, there are far more Romans that Polanski. Particularly now there are loads of Poles around.

But if your dh hates it, that's a no-brainer.

So....Raoul? Does that work in Russian?
Radek? Radislav?

bigstripeytiger · 09/10/2009 19:56

I like Roman as a name.
Cate Blanchett has a son called Roman.
Bit difficult to use the name if your DH doesnt like it though.

thisisyesterday · 09/10/2009 20:00

i LOVE Roman. def do it!

I used a name for ds3 that dp didn't like. I compromised with ds2, and was very keen to have a name i really wanted. everyone loves it now, and when i went through a phase of thinking i wanted to change it (yes, i know i know) even dp said "but it's his name!"

thisisyesterday · 09/10/2009 20:01

u know what? right now people will think of roman polanski when you say it.

i doubt they will in a few months time though

Chynah · 09/10/2009 21:10

DS middle name is Roman - I love it!

DiamondHead · 09/10/2009 21:14

Mel Sykes has a Roman too.

DiamondHead · 09/10/2009 21:16

And the first Roman that comes into my head is Abramovich.

I really like it.

But very unfair to insist if DH doesn't like.

Back to the drawing board I think.
