We're expecting DC2 and I have my heart set on calling it Roman if it's a boy. Problem is, dh doesn't like it and neither does my mum. I thought dh would be happy with the choice as it's used in Russia (dh is Russian) but alas no.
When we had ds1 the only boys name we both agreed on and liked was Maxim, calling him Max. We could not think of one other boy's name that we both liked. He'd reel off lots of Russian boys names, all of which I disliked and he didn't like any of the English boys names I gave.
We're going to be in such a dilemma if dc2 is a boy!
When I told mum the other day I'd like to call it Roman she nearly fell out her chair in shock and said it's a delboy name. also, she said that people would think of roman polanski. I said that's as ridiculous as people thinking harold - shipman; pete - sutcliffe; ian - huntley.
What do you think of Roman?
Please could you suggest to me Russian boys names - perhaps there's one dh didn't list that i'd like too.

How about "Levin", the salt of the earth hero of Anna Karennin? My friends were going to use that before deciding it was too Russian given they are both English. They went for Josef instead.

brockleybelle · 14/10/2009 19:53

Patsy, just asked hubby what he thinks of levin: "no no no no no". i take it he doesn't like it then . He said it's a surname and it's Jewish - he doesn't want a Jewish name, so therefore that chucks the entire Old Testament out the window too. There are quite a few boys names in there that I love but it's a no-go (in Russia, you do not give Hebrew names unless you're Jewish). Can you see my frustration? He doesn't like any English names, doesn't have many Russian names on his 'like' list, and the ones he does I can't stand, and although it's been suggested we need to broaden our search we've yet to find one we both agree on. Arrrggggh!!

How about Nikolai/Nicholas? The shortened form in Russian would be Kolya and in English Nick, which is something to bear in mind (as you probably know, Russians always automatically shorten children's names so Alexander, for example, would always be Sasha).

Most of the first-born mixed Russian/something else children we know are called Alexander (or Alexandra for a girl). Some of the other mixed Russian/something else boys' names I can think of are Maxim (which you already have!), Nikita, Ivan (shortened to Vania), Daniil/Daniel (shortened to Dania), which are all more Russian than English or neutral, apart from Daniel (there's also Misha - short for Mikhail/Michael). From MmeG's list, Anton and Konstantine work well in Russian.

What are the other names on your dh's "like" list? Or have you already agreed and chosen a name now?

Abramovich was also the first Roman that popped into my head, not Polanski.

Hi Louise,

Thanks so much for taking the trouble to post all those suggestions. The problem is, I don't really like any of them!! poor dh! I think I've gotten over Roman now as it aint happening. I rather like Leo, although that wouldn't be my first choice, but I really don't like any of dh's suggestions. He loves Andre

I will show him your suggestions and we can talk them through.

Thanks!

You have great taste: Maxim is a fab name, Roman is a fab name too. How about Feliks? (Russian version of Felix).

Go for it!!!!!

Heated · 11/12/2009 21:42

I like Maxim a lot.

Anton
Felix
Gregori
Constantin
Luka
Nikolai
Sebastian
Viktor

I love the name Roman. My first thought would be Roman Abramowich (sp?) rather than Roman Polanski. Which names does your DH like?

MissGreatBritain · 11/12/2009 21:51

How about Leon?

RnB · 11/12/2009 21:55

I love it and it is my no1 choice if this baby is a boy.

Maxim is on my list too

NotanOtter · 12/12/2009 20:31

my dd is Alexandra but known as shortened version - does not seem too russian/french just her name iykwim

happymerrychristmas · 13/12/2009 10:43

Roman is great! Translates well into other languages too.

brockleybelle · 01/01/2010 11:57

So wish my dh shared you ladies enthusiasm for my baby-naming skills. Roman still a definite no-no. We find out what the sex is on Wednesday............if it's a boy i've very half-heartedly agreed to a name that i don't love (at all) but it's the only one that dh suggested that I can bring myself to agree on

I like it. reminds me of a soap I used to watch, was it Bold and The Beautiful? I think there was a Roman in that.

mathanxiety · 01/01/2010 20:20

What's the name, brockleybelle?

brockleybelle · 02/01/2010 20:57

Sugar, not sure about B&B but there's a Roman in Home and Away.
Mathanxiety, it's daniel. really not 'me'.

Daniel in Russian is Daniil - maybe you would prefer the sound of this to the English sounding Daniel? The short form would be Dania.

Or perhaps it's not a boy after all and you have a girl's name you both like instead?

brockleybelle · 16/01/2010 15:37

hi Louise! We've found out we're having a girl! . Which renders this entire conversation obsolete - for now

As for Daniil, I couldn't really see English people pronouncing it the proper Russian way and just calling him Daniel. Anyway, glad I don't have to think of all this for the time being
