Theodore - Want some opinions...

Hi all,

Have posted before asking for a name for DS2 (due in 2 months, panic panic, the pain of labour is starting to come back to haunt me ). Just a bit of background - we are a mixed race couple so DCs will have a Chinese middle name, therefore first name has to be relatively 'simple' as middle name will be two syllabus. Also, last name is two syllabus, ends with '-ley'. Wanted Atticus for DS1 but he ended up as Aidan. Have to admit, it suits DS1 very well. Have been very keen on Dashiell for DS2 but DH not keen at all.

So been really stuck for ideas. Last couple of days, had a flash of inspiration and now really loving Theodore. Always liked Theo but think that's too informal, will be great for nn. Also, I have to say I love the nn 'Teddy' for when DS2 is little.

Aidan and Theodore look and sound nice together too. I haven't given up on Dashiell completely, I think Dash as a nn is so cool. Almost everyone at work prefers Theodore over Dashiell? Opinions anyone?

If you slam both names, at least give me some other ideas. Did like Elliot and Ethan but too popular for my liking now (would like something out of Top 50 at least!). Also really like literary names (i.e. Beckett, Auden, Tennyson, Darcy, Elliot falls under the same category...) but haven't found one that works for us yet, or rather, I am brave enough to consider yet. Thanks!

I have a Theo but he isn't a Theodore, but I do like that name. I don't hate Dashiell but I don't love it much either, it reminds me of Cate Blanchett as she has a Dashiell but that's no bad thing.

Thanks for all your opinions. Pretty positive on Theodore, which is good. I've kinda given up on the name game until Theodore got me all excited again...

yogabird - Sidney is lovely but I already know two little boys with that name and it doesn't go well with the surname, it would be similar to 'Sidney Bradley' if you see what I mean.

lockets - Not keen on the first three names. Cassius is nice but I would forever associate it with Mohammed Ali.

bluebump - Yes, Cate Blanchett has a Dashiell, Dashiell is also the name of the little boy in The Incredibles...

I like Theo but not Theodore or Dashiell.. How about Zachary or Isaac?

what about Cassian then? similar to Cassius without the associations

Theodore is beautiful, and Theo as an abbreviation is lovely AND pretty cool.

Certainly way better than 'Dash' which sounds like an irritating little dog.

Can't do Zachary or Isaac, I know too many little boys with those names (including a very close cousin's little boy!).

dizzy I was actually thinking about Caspian (Aidan means 'little fire' and I thought a water name would be nice to balance it up...) but not sure if I am brave enough for that.

Cassius is a FAB name I have to admit. Can't imagine DH going for it though. DH is away for work, will test out Theodore on him tomorrow and let you all know the reaction!

Well, I don't think Auden would be fair since Aidan is your DS1 name. Casper?

DH veto-ed Theodore, doesn't like it at all. Said people will call him Theo for short and Teddy is nn for Edward, not Theodore. Back to square one. We are so unprepared for this one. Argh!

Mathanxiety - I know one Casper and I don't really like it as he's rather weedy...

I love Theodore, but bear in mind that Theo is becoming a really popular name, if that is important to you to avoid.

Angel - Theodore Rosevelt was Teddy rosevelt and the namesake of the Teddy Bear, so Teddy is def a Theodore nickname as well as an Edward nickname.
What about Edward? My fav name is Leo.
Dashiel sounds African American to me - not sure why.

I used to think my cousin's name of Theo didn't suit him but recently it really does. He is 14 now and I would say for the last few years you can see Theo suits him.

So maybe not a great name for a baby but when they are older its a good name I think.

dizzydixies - From your list, only Elliot still strikes me I guess. Some lovely names on your list but we can't use for various reasons - relatives' names etc.

hulabula - Like your list! I quite like Tobias too. Might try that out on DH later. Thomas too common for my liking and Quentin I don't have strong feelings for one way or the other.

Bubbaluv - Wanna come and explain to DH?

custardo and Loujalou - I know Theo is getting popular, which is why I quite like Theodore just for it to be a bit different. I agree with it being more of a grown-up name, hence I thought Teddy would be cute.

Poor baby so far has no bed to sleep on (we can't decide on that either due to having to consider sleeping arrangements with DS1 in near future) and no name!

Dashiell. No question. That's what we were going to call our first born until she turned out to be a girl and became Penelope instead.

Also like Isaac and Zachary.

I like Ellis but surname will end with 'ley' so I don't like the way it sounds with the surname.

Boobz - I can't decide if Dashiell is genuinely a fantastic name or it's just my pregnancy hormones. I really wanted Atticus for DS1 (and would still love it if I had given the name to him!) but I have to admit Aidan really suits him so not sure if Dashiell is DC2's Atticus if you know what I mean!

dizzy - We have the same taste in names! Well, sort of... I love Rufus too but it doesn't sound right with our surname. Rufus Wainwright sounds fab but not with our surname. Would love to comment individually on each of the names you have suggested... but might give birth first before I finished! Ha ha.
