allaboutme · 04/09/2009 10:33

My Mum is a Janet. It does have quite a harsh sound to it.
My Mum warned us all to NEVER name any of our children after her, even for a middle name as she has always hated it HTH

hayes · 04/09/2009 10:34

my friend called Janet she hates it she thinks its an old ladies name

LouMacca · 04/09/2009 11:16

Terrible.

prettybird · 04/09/2009 11:31

I am a Janet but "changed" my name when I went to Uni to Jan, as I felt that "Janet" was too "Doctor Finlay's casebook"

Although I wasn't born Scottish (born in South Africa), by chance we ended up moving to Scotland when I was 3, so as far as I am concerned I am Scottish.

No. Tak a t off and make it Jane.

MaggieVirgo · 04/09/2009 11:55

PS< Juliet is gorgeous. Pick that instead of dowdy Janet.

WreckOfTheHesperus · 04/09/2009 11:57

How about the more glamourous version, Jeanette?

kando · 04/09/2009 12:01

My dd is Olivia Janet (never use her middle names though!). Quite like the name but couldn't quite bring myself to use it as a first name. [She is named after my Granny Janet]

Rosebud05 · 04/09/2009 21:44

I'm a Janet and wouldn't particularly wish it on anyone. Dowdy, middle-England and plain dull. Many nicer names beginning with J that pps have mentioned. Would use it as a middle name if it was in the family (ie would be pleased if my dcs used it as a middle name for their dds in years to come!).

angrypixie · 04/09/2009 21:50

Dammit Janet

rocketupbum · 04/09/2009 21:53

My Granny was Janet and always called Netta, which I quite like. On another note i have a few friends who refer to their fanjos as their janets. Not sure if that will have helped on balance!

sarahsyrup · 04/09/2009 21:54

Makes me think of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, sorry.

mawbroon · 04/09/2009 21:54

hey prettybird! Never thought of you as a Janet I must say.

Whatever a Janet is

BerylCole · 04/09/2009 21:54

...and John.

Such an enormous NO.

prettybird · 05/09/2009 14:11

mawbroon. My sentiments exactly!

tootyflooty · 05/09/2009 14:28

not one I would use, my niece has a middle name of joan, after a grandmother which is another old name, and does sound odd with her modern ist name, if you have family reasons for wanting to use it then add it as a middle name. I don't think she would be teased but it is old fashoned and not a name that has kept popularity.

indiechick · 05/09/2009 19:26

Think you've all confirmed what I thought, it's after my grandmother, although I'm tempted to ask her to chose a name as her's isn't that great, would that be a bit insulting?!

Showofhands, get lost!
