We're hippies at heart, and I regret choosing such a 'normal' name for DS1 - help please for DS2?!

DS1 is Ethan. We gave him a really really rare hippy-sounding middle name, but I wish we'd been braver and gone for something more unusual for his first name. I don't want to do the same this time...

I like Asher but I think it's about to become really popular. We also love celtic / old english names.

Suggestions?

I'm not sure if these qualify but i like

Justice
Cosmos (well it actually says Cosmic on here but the whole site seems a bit cheesy so i winged it a bit)
Ocean
Xavier

edam · 31/08/2009 22:02

Taliesin. Still regret not giving it to ds1, a little.

KristinaM · 31/08/2009 22:04

sorry to ask...but what if your child is not a hippie at heart and hates being called Ocean ?

Why dont you change your own names to reflect your beliefs/views? Serious question btw - many people change their names.

pasturesnew · 31/08/2009 22:05

I like:

Gawain as in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Eden but that is too similar to Ethan, isn't it?

Leaf as (a) leaves are nice and (b) it sounds like Lief which means loved one in various N European languages I think and which is also a normal man's name anyway

River as rivers are good too.

MrsMattie · 31/08/2009 22:05

Oisin. Gorgeous Gaelic name. Desperately wanted it for DS but DH scoffed.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 31/08/2009 22:07

We felt the same.
DS1 has a scottish name.
DS2 is Sol.

sushistar · 31/08/2009 22:18

Kristina, EVERYONE names their child according to their own culture, belifs and worldviews. That's part of what we hand on to our children, surely?

What if a Spanish baby names Maria grows up and doesn't want to be catholic, or a muslim little boy called Mohammed decides not to be muslim?

Children inherit their names, and lots else besides, from us - then make the best of it they can. And as long as they are named with love and thought, with no intention to be cruel and with due attention to the pros and cons of having a normal / different sounding name, then surely that's the best we can do?

DH is considering Taliesin. I think Eden is a girl's name?

Lief is nice, but with our surname sounds wrong.

Thanks for suggestions....

I love

River
Roam
Forrest

sushistar · 31/08/2009 22:52

Ooh, really like both Asa (means 'healer') and Isa ('laughter'), both hebrew which is nice as Ethan is hebrew too.

Hmmm, will have to convinve DH!

OP posts:
sushistar · 31/08/2009 22:54

Roam is nice.

I love river / forest / ocean but our surname won't go with names like that. It has to be more abstract, because our surname is a common noun if you see what I mean.

Anya4 · 31/08/2009 23:11

Reuven (old hebrew name)

sushistar · 31/08/2009 23:14

Frodo

Jude is my nephew's name. I love it.

TwoPersephone · 01/09/2009 08:59

Soren

SoupDragon · 01/09/2009 09:02

I think there are plenty or "proper" names that fit your criteria without going for something as whacky as Ocean. Ooodles of Celtic/old English names.

pasturesnew · 01/09/2009 12:25

What about "Dragon" as a boy's name?

I also like "Bear" and "Rock"

phdlife · 01/09/2009 12:31

check out this site - I spent an inordinate amount of time on it when we were looking for dc2.

suwoo · 01/09/2009 12:43

I was going to suggest Asa. I love it and it was very nearly DS2's middle name.
