We're hippies at heart, and I regret choosing such a 'normal' name for DS1 - help please for DS2?!

DS1 is Ethan. We gave him a really really rare hippy-sounding middle name, but I wish we'd been braver and gone for something more unusual for his first name. I don't want to do the same this time...

I like Asher but I think it's about to become really popular. We also love celtic / old english names.

Suggestions?

Archer, Archie for short.

LadyoftheBathtub · 01/09/2009 17:50

I would love to call a boy Wolf or Wulf (old english version) but I don't think DP would go for it.

Also like Inigo. Asher is lovely too.

We called our DS a very very unusual name but it can be shortened to something that is a better-known (though rare) name - however that shortened version is now becoming more popular. There's not much you can do about it but I'm pleased that the full-length version is still unique. That's one route you could go down. Or use the old english spelling Aeschere, though it wouldn't make life easy...

Other OE names... Hengest, Aelfric (shorten to Alfie), Cnut (maybe not...), Beowulf, Eadwacer (Eddie)... ooh and I just found a website here

sushistar · 01/09/2009 17:55

That's a wonderful website phdlife, thanks! Will have a longer browse this evening.

So far I like...

Asa
Isa
Soren (I like Kierkegaard so that would work!)
Ezra
Taliesin

Jude is nice but I think we'll have the same thing as with Ethan - I know 2 baby Judes...

OP posts:
Rindercella · 01/09/2009 18:06

Yeah, Jude isn't such an obscure name anymore.

River
Cassius
Fox

Personally I don't much liek River or Fox, but I do consider them to be hippyish names.

sushistar · 01/09/2009 18:09

I thought about Ascher rather than Asher - but it will still SOUND the same, y'know? And I have this feeling it will become very popular in the next few years...
Does anyone else think so or is it just me?

Heath came very close to being ds1's name... and then ds2's name too! As did Reed (but getting too popular now).

mustrunmore · 01/09/2009 18:15

Oh, and Lal was up in the top 10 for ages, as were Ashlar and Fenn.

belgo · 01/09/2009 18:19

Thor (god of thunder) would go well with Ethan.

Stokey · 01/09/2009 18:29

Merlin, Orion, Jupiter

Andromeda, Aurora, Luna for girls

I love Luna & Orion but DH vetoed both as too hippy

there are some cool moon names too - Io, Callisto

seeker · 01/09/2009 18:36

How do you know that your child is going to be a hippy too?

MaggieLeo · 01/09/2009 18:55

Jago or Fergus.

I don't think you can go too mad with older brother Ethan.

sushistar · 01/09/2009 19:11

Seeker, see earlier - I already answered that question!

Ok, so...

Asa
Isa
Soren (I like Kierkegaard so that would work!)
Ezra
Taliesin
Orion (I like alot but I think DH will veto)

And some we thought of while eating tea... opinions welcome...

Aram
Meshach (bible name pronounced mee-shak)
Nehamiah

Anything like river / fox / ocean / heath can't go with our surname, because it is also a noun - a geographical noun. So anything too literal as the first name sounds like a topographical feature rather than a name iyswim.

ShowOfHands · 01/09/2009 19:14

I love Ivo at the moment. Asa is also lovely. I would love to be brave enough to have a Thor.

Umlellala · 01/09/2009 19:21

Oh boo to no literal names, our ds is Sky/Skyler (Schuyler anglicised/mispelt. It is a name, no matter what Seeker thinks ).

I loved Leon and Emil but dh vetoed cos of his french surname (and we are not french). Not v hippy though.

Umlellala · 01/09/2009 19:22

Asher v nice. Don't think it is too popular (or matters much).

seeker · 01/09/2009 19:27

But nobody will ever EXPECT a Maria to be a Catholic. Or say "Sorry, what was that?" when she says her name. Or say "How do you spell that?" or "Oh, that's unusual!" EVERY SINGLE TIME she gives her name for the rest of her life. Maria's staff won't snigger behind their hands at her name, or make jokes about her name. She will never feel the slightest hesitation at giving her name to someone, even if she is a spotty undersized 12 year old. Or a tubby middle aged grandma. And the staff in the old people's home won't laugh at her.

Laquitar · 01/09/2009 19:41

Sorry to say this but if you are a real 'hippy at heart' you don't have to try so hard

Tortington · 01/09/2009 19:44

starlight monkeypants

mathanxiety · 01/09/2009 19:59

Aldyn or Aldynne (Old English)? N sound goes with Ethan

MaggieLeo · 01/09/2009 20:07

How hippy would you go,, with sibling Ethan?

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 01/09/2009 20:09

Lol..thought you were suggesting 'Oodles' soupdragon..

2girls2love · 01/09/2009 20:22

If dd2 was a boy was going to call him Axel my dh thought I was joking but I would have loved it....

Winetimeisfinetime · 01/09/2009 20:29

If you like Asher but think it's going to be too popular, how about Ashwin - it's an Old English name meaning 'spear friend' and also a Hindu name.

kittymax · 01/09/2009 20:35

When we lived in Spain, our friend's mum visited him from Argentina. Her name is Isabella, but they all called her Isa.

sushistar · 01/09/2009 21:09

Axel - wasn't he one of the Gladiators on that early 90s TV show?

Ashwin is lovely winetime. Really lovely. Will try to persuade DH. He's wittering on about 'Asaph' - what does everyone think about that one? He was a Celtic saint and also the name of the bloke that wrote lots of the psalms in the bible (isn't wikepedia wonderful!)

I know Asher is not common now Umlellala but I think it will be.

Seeker, how rude to snigger at someone's name behind their back!!!
