Flora?

Hi,

I just love the name Flora and have been thinking about this for months and cannot pick another name over it. But my mum and sister both think it unwise due to the obvious connection with the margarine and say that she may be bullied about this when she is older.
I am pretty sure we will go ahead with Flora but just wanted to know other opinions as nobody else knows we are expecting another girl, so have no one else to ask.
Thanks

I couldn't get over the margarine tbh.

Florence is nicer anyway.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 29/08/2009 09:10

I like it. I met a Flora yesterday.
I didnt once think of the maragarine.
(despite dh always buying it)

Go for it, If you love it that much you will regret notusing it.
Congratulations btw.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 29/08/2009 09:11

Florence is beautiful. Could then shorten to Flora.

moonbird · 29/08/2009 09:14

Good I am glad no1putbabyinthecorner, that you didn't think about the marg.
I don't want to regret using it and cannot think of another name that I love so much...but just the niggle of my mum and sister. Partner thinks we should go ahead as he loves it too.

Florence so much nicer.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 29/08/2009 09:23

Well if you have partner onside go for it. Dh didn't like any of mine.
DDs name was one we both loved, as he didn't like my first choice.
We compromised on ds name. I like it,but it was never my number one choice either.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 29/08/2009 09:24

I really should preview, well done if you made sense of that post.

wheniwishuponastar · 29/08/2009 09:32

i have a good friend called flora. men tease her for it, but whats new.

macherie · 29/08/2009 09:35

My friend has a flora, her dh and ILs were so against her name because of the margarine conntations, said she would be teased, etc.

She is 4 now, her name suits her and she never been teased about it.

I think it's lovely.

lycheemartini · 29/08/2009 10:27

This is my favourite name too - but other half put off by the margerine and friends' opinions divided..I'd happily use it but think he will veto..

I like it. I know a Clover too.

Flora NO Longer says, 'spreads easily' on the lid, as that is obviously a given these days.

Jojay · 29/08/2009 14:02

Flora is a beautiful name and MUCH nicer than Florence.

I know a million Florences (ish ).

There is also the 'Interflora' connotation though.............

MamaLazarou · 29/08/2009 14:23

Spreads easily.

mrswee · 29/08/2009 15:08

Flora is a lovely name, my friend has two girls- Flora and a Josie

She is at nursery and did come home saying the word 'margarine' over and over again one day but she wasn't at all fazed by it!

I still think it is a great name, there are much worse name connotations in other names after all

Paolosgirl · 29/08/2009 15:10

I love it - I wanted it for DD, but it was vetoed.

Florence is coming back into fashion, but not as pretty as Flora.

BonsoirAnna · 29/08/2009 15:12

I have a Flora

noddyholder · 29/08/2009 15:13

I love it defintiely one of my faves.Sweet on a little girl and timeless as a woman

MaggieLeo · 29/08/2009 15:14

I don't think she'd be bullied. The name has gone too main stream now. It's not Emily but ykwim. a flora my age might have had it tough occasionally.

moonbird · 29/08/2009 15:27

Thanks for the positive comments. I think it is such a pretty name for a girl and really want one that I love.

I was only worried for when she was a bit older, just before her teens and on into her teens (high school). But I guess if she is confident (hopefully), then it shouldn't faze her.

I love Flora. AA Gill has a daughter by the name. I think only unimaginative types would tease her with the marg thing, which can now be countered by the recent launch of the Gucci perfume by the same name. Could become a WAG name......

moonbird · 29/08/2009 15:30

Oh please no!!!

moonbird · 29/08/2009 15:52

...that is to the WAG comment, not the perfume.

I love it!

Twistle · 29/08/2009 17:04

I have one. Can't see the teasing potential myself, I mean, someone says "ooh, like the marg" and she says "yes" - what's to tease? Anyway, I wouldn't like to mess with my Flora....
