Flora?

Hi,

I just love the name Flora and have been thinking about this for months and cannot pick another name over it. But my mum and sister both think it unwise due to the obvious connection with the margarine and say that she may be bullied about this when she is older.
I am pretty sure we will go ahead with Flora but just wanted to know other opinions as nobody else knows we are expecting another girl, so have no one else to ask.
Thanks

we have a flora and still love the name. never regretted it. in-laws still buy "flora" and ask for "flora" at the dinner table but can't win them all!! she really suits it and everyone likes it - but then they'd never tell you otherwise would they!

doubleexpresso · 29/08/2009 20:16

I think Flora is an incredibly pretty name and I honestly don't think it would lead to any teasing issues. Go for it!

loobylu3 · 29/08/2009 20:25

I think it's really pretty. Go for it!

malung · 29/08/2009 21:46

Flora is a beautiful name.

GirlsAreLoud · 29/08/2009 21:49

Flora is beautiful.

Much nicer, lighter and prettier than Florence I think, which I always see as a bit of a 'dumpy' name for some reason.

Sarimillie · 29/08/2009 22:00

Beautiful name - go for it.

justbeenforapromenade · 29/08/2009 22:21

No, moonbird, I don't honestly believe that Flora will take off with the WAGs....

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 30/08/2009 19:29

Isn't flora said in the context of bacteria in the vagina? Is that not what everyone associates it with?

malung · 30/08/2009 20:27

No

It's a fab name. So so beautiful. I don't get the margarine thing at all. I know a beautiful Flora too, perhaps the same one?

Do you have any Scottish connections? It's a very traditional highland/island name there though used more by posh-Scots in the last 2 decades. The gaelic version is Floraidh, pronounced Flaw-ray.

If you love it, go for it. I just don't understand this preoccupation with potential future teasing.

mumzy · 31/08/2009 09:29

Beautiful classic name makes me think of Flora McDonald rather than margerine. Also IMO suits all ages so I would'nt be worried about the teenage bit. The problem with Florence is it does get shorted to Flo aka Andy Capp

BonsoirAnna · 31/08/2009 09:30

A friend of mine's maiden name was MacDonald and she called her DC4 Flora

moonbird · 31/08/2009 11:03

Yes, her father is Scottish and we moved to Scotland three years ago, but not posh-Scots though.
Good to hear all the nice comments, although I really don't think many will associate the name with human bacteria...well I hope not!

It's always on that fanjo cream advert! 'Restores the flora of bacteria in the vagina' or something to that effect, honestly, I am not mad much.

i knew I wasn't demented, just a little clueless.

2nd for me is the margerine, but go with what you want because it's your babba and you need to like the name.

bellissima · 31/08/2009 13:10

Florrie. (Florence). Nice.

frazzledoldbag · 02/09/2009 09:00

I have a Flora. Fabulous name. Nobody mentions margerine. Who on earth buys that vile stuff anyway.????Lurpack all the way!

changer22 · 02/09/2009 09:02

I love it.

frazzledoldbag · 02/09/2009 09:03

oh and incidentally my Flora is stunningly beautiful......I know I'm her mother but seriously, she is!
and if you love an name that much and then don't use it I reckon you'll regret it.
Good luck!

angrypixie · 02/09/2009 09:14

No No No

one of my dear friends is a Flora and still living with 'spreads easily' She's resorted to introducing herself as Flo.

moonbird · 02/09/2009 11:52

I think I am going to stick with it as I do think I would regret it.

I don't mind Florrie.
